Since 2006, PUB, the national water agency, has been opening up reservoirs for recreational activities such as boating and fishing. This is in line with our efforts to bring people closer to water as part of the Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters (ABC Waters) programme. By encouraging people to enjoy water, it is hoped that they will value it and play a part in protecting this precious resource and keeping it clean.
PUB has built fishing jetties and designated fishing grounds for public use while taking into consideration the importance of public safety, water quality, reservoir operations and maintenance as well as other water activities. PUB therefore encourages the public to adopt good fishing etiquette such as the use of artificial baits, maintaining a clear distance when casting fishing lines and practising 'catch and release' at the reservoirs.
PUB takes stern action against illegal fishing and the use of live bait, which are prohibited under the regulations. Illegal fishing offences are compoundable and court action will be taken against repeat offenders. PUB officers will continue to carry out daily patrols at the reservoirs and take enforcement actions against illegal fishing. We have identified the hot spots frequent by illegal anglers and will continue to conduct more spot checks at these areas on a regular basis.
In addition, to create public awareness and educate the public on fishing activities, PUB is working with the Sports Fishing Association (Singapore) and the Gamefish & Aquatic Rehabilitation Society to hold workshops to share good fishing etiquette like sports fishing with artificial baits, practising 'clean up after fishing' and 'catch and release' habits. PUB welcomes members of the public who share the same vision of promoting recreational fishing to volunteer their services with the two organisations.
We are aware of the proximity of the kayaking zone to the fishing area at MacRitchie Reservoir. Kayakers are briefed on the safety rules and reminded to stay away from the fishing ground.
