HERITAGE highlights a sense of identity and it is disheartening that Singaporean youth lack greater interest in their nation's heritage ("Raise a nation of heritage guardians"; Monday).
This forecasts a dismal future for Singapore's heritage scene.
The issue here is not how we can get young people involved in promoting their heritage but why they are not excited about it in the first place. It boils down to teaching methods in schools.
Heritage awareness should be nurtured within the classroom, then further cultivated with external heritage activities. There should also be more and better follow-ups linking the excursion trips with class work as students tend to trivialise school excursions and the possible takeaways from those trips.
Involving youth in heritage awareness activities alone will not necessarily boost their interest.

hard la...
U ask kids to learn heritage, they rather play game, sports, or even take tuition...
ya lor play games their the best of the best
Yeah, so what is our heritage? This being a top-down society, if the leaders don't express an interest in preserving and publicising it, who else will?

Double that.
If the government doesn't do more, who will? Especially when they're the ones that are driving the country into globalisation.
Just look at the Chinese population lately. Its quite rare to see kids in traditional clothes on CNY anymore.
The other rising trend i see though are Chinese joining in and Dressing up during Hari Raya. It is definitely nice to see these kind of bonding amongst the main races. And from the feedback I get frm friends of different racial background, they think its rather fun to dress up during these festive holidays.
So maybe even if whilst it look like we are loosing our tradition and heritage, the younger generation somehow find ways to pick up and create their own way of preserving traditions..
Hokay...
for the chinese, we know cheongsam are for the girls...
Then the boys wear wat ah?
I think more ppl will dress up during hari raya is becoz U still see ppl wearing traditional malay clothes(forgot call wat) on normal days... It's not sooo akward...

†extinct.
I think it’s hard, especially ppl from the English Ed families (like me)
The only Chinese festival my family celebrates is CNY and if you talk about traditional practices and customs, I know nothing about them.
So you can imagine my kids will know nothing about the traditional practices and customs from me.
As for my hubby, his family only celebrates Good Friday & Christmas so most likely our kids (if any) will have to learn about their heritage in school or some other sources.
Anyway, what is our heritage??? Do we actually go through it by race when our country is really a mish mash of “heritages”?
Does not knowing our racial heritage make us less Singaporean because I think what makes us unique is the blend of cultures, customs and practices.
Haha.... later a lot of Chinese here Peranakan... next CNY all wear sarong kebaya out.
Can getai count as our heritage?? might have the best chance.....focus on cultural heritage and things like chinese opera, traditional hand puppetry...
Gonna be difficult because of globalization of US pop culture. Everything you watch, wear, eat, read, listen is related to the western culture and at this point in time, western culture is the dominant culture here.

getai hertiage???
then why got ppl complain our heritage???
why bother? our leaders only objective is to make us slave to earn their big fat paycheck. We need to stay competitive to survive in this country and learning hertiage surely is not something that can help us survive
