Emmanuel Adebayor
cautioned Chelsea and Manchester United that Manchester City will be serious contenders
for the Premier League title next
season.
The Togo international believes that City can claim a top
three spot in the league after the team spent £59 million already this
summer to sign David Silva, Yaya Toure and Jerome Boateng.
Adebayor
hopes that a great start in their opening two matches against Tottenham
“Fifth
place last season was OK, but we want to do better than that this time
and we’re looking for the top three,” Adebayor told The Mirror.
“The
start to the season is very important in many ways. If we go to
Tottenham and get a good result and then do the same against Liverpool,
it will be great for the confidence and show the guys that we are title
contenders.
“It’s a difficult start to the season, but it’s good
for us in the sense that we can send a message out.
“If we are
going to win the title, we should not be concerned about how the
fixtures fall.”
City are currently on tour in the United States,
training at Nike’s headquarters in Portland, Oregon, as they prepare for
the Premier League season.
Adebayor, who scored 14 goals in 26
games last year, believes that City’s preparation in America will help
the team get off to a great start this term.
“This is a perfect
chance for us to get some hard work done as a group and we have some
great facilities in the United States.
“The facilities we have at
the Nike HQ in Portland are spectacular and we have some exciting games
against big teams whilst we are in the United States. There is great
anticipation among the players about the coming season.”
