England's World Cup plans have been thrown into chaos with Rio Ferdinand ruled out of the tournament with a knee injury.
Ferdinand was taken to hospital in South Africa for a scan after sustaining an injury to his left knee during the final moments of Friday's training session in Rustenburg.
He left hospital on crutches and has since returned to England's training headquarters.
Sportsmail understands Ferdinand will be sidelined for at least three weeks, ending any hopes of playing in the finals.
Tottenham defender Michael Dawson is on his way to South Africa having been called up as an emergency standby.
Ruled out: Rio Ferdinand leaves hospital on crutches
The huge blow comes just eight days before England's World Cup campaign kicks off against the United States.
Ledley King and Jamie Carragher will both now fancy their chances of a place in England's defence for their World Cup opener on June 12.
Put through his paces: Rio Ferdinand taking part in England's first training session in South Africa
Capello earlier told reporters: 'The bad news is in the last moment of the training, Rio suffered a problem with the knee.
'He has just gone to hospital for a scan. We hope it will not be so bad an injury but we have Michael Dawson on call.
'It came from a minor tackle during the training. How bad is it? We will have to wait and see.
Worry for England: Ferdinand is having a scan on his injured knee
Vice-captain Steven Gerrard will now wear the captain's armband in South Africa.
Ferdinand had been optimistic of enjoying an injury-free World Cup after a season dogged by problems at Manchester United.
He made just 21 appearances for his club this season, starting only 13 Premier League games, in a season disrupted by a back injury.
Reasons to be concerned: Ferdinand was dogged by injury problems last season with Manchester United
However he had trained with no setbacks during England's two-week camp in Austria, and also came through the friendly internationals with Mexico and Japan unscathed.
Goalkeeper David James also missed training on Friday but Capello admitted to being much less concerned with that situation, insisting the 39-year-old had 'only a slight knee problem'.
Training: Rio Ferdinand and Gareth Barry with the rest of the England squad in Rustenburg on Friday
England play their first World Cup match next weekend against the United States in Rustenburg on June 12.
They then face Algeria and Slovenia in their next two group games, on June 18 and June23.
Didier Drogba is set to miss out on the World Cup after breaking his arm in Ivory Coast's friendly match with Japan.
Drogba collapsed under a heavy challenge with Marcus Tanaka, just minutes after the opposition defender had deflected the Chelsea striker's free-kick into his own net.
Team spokesman Eric Kacou confirmed that doctors had diagnosed the arm fracture after he was taken off 15 minutes into the Elephant's 2-0 friendly win.
Kacou said: 'It is a fracture in his right arm. The doctor hasn't said yet whether he can play in the World Cup.'
Agony: Drogba appeared to be in some pain straight after the tackle from Tanaka
And manager Sven Goran Eriksson conceded that losing Drogba would be a huge blow to his side's chances in South Africa.
He said: 'It's very worrying, he is our captain, one of the best strikers in the world. It [his challenge] wasn't bad or stupid. He didn't want to hurt anyone. Football is a game of contact '
The injury is devastating news for the team as Drogba was in sparkling form for Chelsea last season.
He scored 37 goals in 44 appearances as Carlo Ancelotti's men landed the Premier League and FA Cup double.
Ouch: Striker Drogba feels the full force of Tanaka's challenge
Early exit: Drogba is helped off after picking himself up off the floor
His absence in South Africa would seriously hinder his side's chances of qualifying from Group G - the 'group of death' - which also contains Brazil, North Korea and Portugal.
Ivory Coast won the game 2-0 after Manchester City defender Kolo Toure adding a late second for the Ivorians.
Eriksson's side open their campaign against Portugal on Tuesday before facing Brazil and North Korea.
what a heartbreak man
sianz dia0
drogba out =.=
NOT 100% OUT OF THE WC 2010, BUT MOST LIKELY. WILL UPDATE IF THERE'S ANY NEW NEWS.
Japan sneaky.
Thats why I see Japan play friendly against England, they are so rough.
ferdinand been injury prone, not a good idea to be made captain.
drogba still got chance to play, with the hand heavily bandage and on painkillers...seen it before on others, ivory coast got few inspirational players so he is important,............... as for england, so many chiefs there, one less is ok,rio is out for sure, you can't go one leg kicking...
Ferdinand confirm out already with Dawson his replacement. Gerrard takes over as captain. No difference anyway since we're all used to England being "Promises alot but always fail to deliver when it matters."
maybe its a good thing if gerrard can inspire himself to play for england..

yes you are right. england always disappoints and fail to deliver when the competition started. england played sucky football, long balls to strikers and midfield cant even string 5-6 passes without losing possession. how to be a world beater with this brand of football. it has been a pain to watch england play like this for the past 10 years.

he cant pass like xavi, or dribble like messi.

maybe not, but his driving runs and long range shots that he used to do for liverpool if he can do it for england..

so far I have not seen Gerrard do it in an england shirt. I hope he does, but I doubt so. even messi, for his mazy dribbling skills, is not able to do it in an argentina shirt so far, but then messi is only 22 and gerrard is 30 already.
I wouldn't call it a shattering blow lmao.
I think it was lucky he got into the squad even. and even luckier he was nominated as captain!
Personally, i think it's a good thing he will be out. Cos this way he can get more rest for next season... I actually hope more of the United players don't play and get themselves fresh for next season for the club....

But injury prone is still injury prone.
He has practically rested for 3/4 of United's season already.
Italy midfielder Andrea Pirlo is in doubt for the World Cup after sustaining a calf injury on Wednesday.
The AC Milan player is resting at home after damaging the calf muscle in his left leg during the Azzurri's 2-1 friendly loss to Mexico on Wednesday night.
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) have confirmed that Pirlo, who will sit out Saturday's friendly against Switzerland, will fly to South Africa with the rest of the squad and continue to undergo evaluation ahead of Italy's opener against Paraguay on 14th June.
Italy's doctor Enrico Castellacci also said the recovery time for such injuries is between 15 to 20 days, meaning Pirlo could be fit for Italy's second group match against New Zealand on June 20.
Coach Marcello Lippi is already uncertain over the fitness of winger Mauro Camoranesi, who has a knee injury, and the loss of Pirlo could prove a severe blow to the holders.
Pirlo was named man of the match in the 2006 World Cup final after scoring a penalty in their shoot-out triumph over France.
The midfielder also landed Italy's first goal of the tournament that year, in their 2-0 win against Ghana.

Mikel latest Chelsea star to miss World Cup finals
Nigeria suffered a blow just under a week away fromn the start of the World Cup as they announced that star midfielder Mikel John Obi had been left out of the squad because he did not want to aggravate a knee injury.
The 23-year-old Chelsea star - who follows club team-mates Michael Ballack, Michael Essien and possibly Didier Drogba in missing out on the finals because of injury - is likely to be replaced by one of the seven players dropped from the squad at their training camp in England last Monday.
"We have dropped Mikel from the World Cup squad after he told the team he did not want to put his career at risk as his knee injury has yet to fully heal after a recent surgery," disclosed top team official Emmanuel Attah on Saturday morning.
Nigeria are drawn in Group B along with two-time champions Argentina, Euro 2004 winners Greece and 2002 World Cup semi-finalists South Korea and play their first match on June 12 against Argentina.

Rio is way over-rated !
Netherlands winger Arjen Robben had to limp off with an injury
during the 6-1 friendly win over Hungary.
The Bayern Munich man
came on as a second half substitute and scored just past the hour mark
and again ten minutes from time, but failed to finish the game when he
was taken off four minutes from the end.
Robben attempted a
backheel but crumbled to the ground in pain as he clutched his left leg
in pain with what looked like a suspected hamstring pull. He was able to
get back on to his feet to trudge off the pitch with the assistance of
the medical team.
There were worrying scenes as Robben went
straight down the tunnel into the dressing room accompanied by Dirk Kuyt instead of
just getting treatment on the bench.
According to Dutch TV,
Robben has since been taken to hospital for MRI scans on his hamstring
and Oranje coach Bert van Marwijk has confirmed that the 26-year-old
winger will not travel with the rest of the squad to South Africa
tonight.
Van Marwijk added in the post-match conference, "It
doesn't look good with Robben."
Extensive tests on Robben's
condition will only be carried out by doctors tomorrow [Sunday].
Robben end his own World Cup chance.
