I'm not buying Singtel's claim that their BPL bid had nothing to do with this.
Industry analysts are adamant that the BPL bid had spoiled the market and spurred FIFA into thinking that there was money to be made from Singapore. I also don't see any other reason as to what made FIFA so greedy.
Sure, FIFA was greedy. Sepp Blatter deserves to be kicked in his Michael Ballack.
But I'm not convinced that the telcos did not deserve any blame. Like it or not, they screwed up, Singtel in particular.
Instead of making really stupid claims like $1/match is cheaper than a cup of kopi (which is already untrue.... kopitiam kopi costs less than that), they should just friggin' apologize to Singaporeans for their cock-ups and offer to slash the subscription rates.

The World Cup broadcast deal has been done and dusted, and it was agreed that both SingTel and StarHub will be offering similarly priced packages for existing cable television users who are interested to watch the World Cup. It will cost $70.62 on or before May 31st and $94.16 after that date (GST included).
So what about those football fans who are neither SingTel nor StarHub subscribers currently? It will cost more than those prices in order to get your hands on the World Cup package.
On the SingTel website, it states that �ew customers who want to watch World Cup content for one month only can sign up for the an all-inclusive Starter Pack. New customers that subscribe to 2010 FIFA World Cup Package alone without any mio TV Content Pack are eligible for the 擲tarter Pack? at $53.50 (with GST).?
So what is the World Cup Starter Pack all about? It is an �ll-inclusive, no-hidden cost set up for customers who choose to take only the 2010 FIFA World Cup? and �llows viewers to enjoy mio TV during the broadcasting period without contract and other content commitment,? according to the SingTel website.
So if you are not an existing SingTel user, you will need to pay another additional $53.50 on top of the $70.62 when you get your World Cup package before May 31st. That adds up to a total of $124.12. The installation charge is waived in this case.
If you get it on or after 1st June, there is an installation fee of $58.85. That means, you will have three separate payments to make ? $94.16 for the World Cup package, $53.50 for the Starter Pack and $58.85 for installation. That adds up to a massive total of $206.51 to watch the World Cup.
As for StarHub, their official website is poor because it does not state clearly what fees new subscribers will have to pay. We抣l do some checking and let you know in due course how much it will cost you if you are a new subscriber and would like to go with StarHub.
Edward Ying, SingTel抯 chief of content and media services, was quoted in media reports as saying, �t $66 (before GST), subscribers will be paying about $1 a game to watch in the comfort of their homes. I think it is reasonable ? less than (the price of) a cup of coffee to watch each live game.?
We think the best thing for readers to do is buy a cup of coffee for 80 cents at your favourite hawker centre and read the fine print. It might cost you a lot more cups of coffee than you realise after you add up all the miscellaneous fees.

hmm hmm hmm.....that's interesting. So there are other charges not reported huh. Seems that their PR is not all that truthful. But $206 is still affordable, divide that by 66 matches, that's just a bowl of wanton mee or laksa per match!! And as one forumer said, "cheaper than going South Africa!!

Don't assume la. The antennae probably costs about $50 for a good one. And that is good for the next 2 world cups considering the ever rising costs to pay the these telcos. And the commentary is not in bahasa. Pre match commentary yes but the match itself is spoken English.

That's what my father did.....sooner or later as u search down the line, you will come to it if your antenna is powerful enough to receive.

Can you let our Ministry, StarHub and SingTel know that Malaysia Astro is providing "FREE" 2010 FIFA World Cup screening of all the 64 matches as long as you are an existing Sports Channel subscriber!!! What a SWEET DEAL and Astro even make it sweeter by screening previous World Cup matches, qualifying matches, history, etc for the past 4 weeks already.
Thank God, I am seconded to work in Malaysia. Malaysia thie time around SURELY BOLEH lah! Singapore service providers always take Singaporean for granted and think that we will always pay higher prices.......booking airline ticket through internet is another great example.
Btw, I have already cancelled my StarHub sports channel and I will NEVER subscribe to SingTel. I do not discriminate any company, but I do not believe that we need 2 private cable stations provider for such a small country. It is really a joke as our lives are governed by those so called scholars who always calimed they are providing more and better deals for us. The goverment need to step in to resolve this.
