I think no big deal for the telcos.
If they lose money on this WC deal, then they will just raise other forms of prices to make up for the lost revenue eg. mobile phones, internet etc.
What can we do?
Go back to the stone age by not using handphones or internet?

lol. if people go to coffeshops just to order coffee and tea in order to watch world cup, then the coffeeshop is in serious financial trouble. how many cup of coffee and tea are they going to earn to break even? of course not. its the beers like tiger beer and heineken and stout lol.

I know, but really raising the price of a cup of coffee just for this world cup is ridiculous. It will not and i repeat change the minds of those who have already decided to boycott and to watch their matches at coffeeshops.
This whole thing about 1 match being cheaper then a cup of coffee is absurd, when you consider that the majority and i mean about 90% of the people actually only watch maybe half or less then that of the total matches.

Look at it this way otherwise if not for the world cup there would only be handful of coffee sold in this case double the coffee sold.
Haiya....like I said....get a good antennae for 40 bucks and then tune into RCTI Indonesia. Not just for world cup, champions league also free. But no EPL.
Fyi, I have been watching free champions league matches and EPL here in Indonesia. Other channels show the La Liga and Serie A too. Sometimes, I see Baihakki Khaizan, Mustafic, Noh Alam Shah and Precious etc in the local leagues lol. Man, their stadiums are full....something like 20-30,000. These matches are played from 4pm weekdays. I wonder....don't these fans have to work? haha.
what is the fisaco about the firm base has the exclusive commercial right for public viewing???
where did that came from?
singaporean get chopped here and there....for one stupid game...
ORGANISERS planning to host live viewing parties of World Cup matches in Singapore next month have run into licensing trouble.
Wharf House, a Singapore-based firm, said it has secured the exclusive rights from world football body Fifa to organise commercial public screenings of World Cup matches here.
The international sports rights agency has a World Cup event planned for Sentosa, and is clamping down on others who intend to charge the public to attend unauthorised viewing parties.
This new thing i guess is... You can't charge for public viewing unless you get this company's authorization... So I am guessing if cinemas wish to screen the WC matches in their halls, they will have to go to this company instead of Starhub or Singtel as in the past?
But for pubs, restaurants and coffeeshops... They have a loophole. And that is they don't charge you for the match itself, but only more expensive beverage...

It would be an easy solution just like the Stripe Club....You Charge US$20 for a mug of Beer....
To get round the issue of entry fees, you ask for "donations".
money money money :)

Well if you put donations than you better actually be passing the bucks to some organizations.....selling compulsory 1st drink folks actually like to drink at that place it just happen that they were showing soccer on their flat panel....

Isn't it what the more expensive coffee at coffee shops are all about already? It's the same idea...
well, i dun know if the malls in singapore are doing something about it, like during the japan/kr wc. they should set-up big screens in the mall and then have extended shopping hours. the boys can watch football while the fairer gender can shop or have night snacks and gossip with their kind. i think business for that 1 month should increase.
here where i live, in a cricket mad country, we still get ALL matches for free. in singapore, money talks completely...and that can only be a bad, bad thing.
They are showing the matches for free at 16 CC.
The election must be coming as this have never occurred in the 40 years of MIW rule.
They must be desperate to make the general crowd happy.
Starhub and Singtel are really out to reap big profits from soccer crazies.
Just north of the border (Astro), they are charging like RM 66.95, that is for the Family package + Sports package + News package. Some folks in Singapore are already paying for the Sports package for Starhub, yet they want to charge extra for them to watch World Cup 2010.
http://www.astro.com.my/getastro/packages/promo/new/packages_lineup.asp
And they want to sucker us into paying SG$70 for just the World Cup 2010.
This goes to show whenever you have monopolies running under the disguise of free competition, all consumers lose out. It's the same with politics, having one dominant political party calling all the shots will reduce the welfare of everybody else.
Only in Singapore, competition raises prices.
Really.

Since where is there competition? It's monopoly all along.
there is a speakers corner protest.....getting hot.
GOOD news for football fans in Singapore: There will be 16 community clubs (CCs) screening World Cup matches for free.
But it is up to them to decide how many of the 64 matches they want to screen. And with games set to kick off at 7.30pm, 10pm and 2.30am (Singapore time), they will also have to decide how they want to organise the screenings.
One of the biggest venues will be Choa Chu Kang CC, which will screen the matches on LCD televisions for 1,000 fans inside the centre's sheltered basketball courts. The CC has yet to confirm if food and drinks will be served during the screenings.
In contrast, Chong Pang CC's efforts will be on a smaller scale. It will host the event inside a seminar room catered for 50 people.
This effort to bring next month's extravaganza from South Africa to the heartland was revealed in a joint announcement yesterday. The organisers behind the move are the Community Development Councils (CDC), People's Association, CCs, SingTel, StarHub and gaming operator Singapore Pools.
The CCs will absorb the costs of using the clubs' premises, which could otherwise have been rented out for recreational use, as well as the utility charges incurred.

My bad.
"Competition".
Wait a second, isn't price fixing a contravention of the Competition Act (Chapter 50B) S.34(2)(a)? Or is it a case of double standards, it applies to coffee shops but doesn't apply to Telcos where the ultimate shareholder is government.
When coffee shop owners come together to fix the price of their kopi, they get charged, but it's alright for government owned Telcos to fix the price of the World Cup 2010 charges.
Agreements, etc., preventing, restricting or distorting competition
(2) For the purposes of subsection (1), agreements, decisions or concerted practices may, in particular, have the object or effect of preventing, restricting or distorting competition within Singapore if they —
(a) directly or indirectly fix purchase or selling prices or any other trading conditions;
subscribe if you deem right...dun if you think not right. many types of mind out there so no point pushing about. if the telcos didnt get the rights to telecast then other mass boycotts will arise...so singaporeans be glad in wat u think is right and go for it!
so what if its free watchlng at CCs?
nothing beats the comfort of watching it at home.
its too late for them to try and appease anyone.
