  Brutal Steve Bruce to cull eight Sunderland stars this summer in bid for the best next season
  

  Steve Bruce plans to axe eight of his squad this summer, including Northern Ireland player George McCartney and former Manchester United full-back Phil Bardsley.

  Players who have been out on loan such as Daryl Murphy, David Healy, Nyron Nosworthy, Teemu Tainio, Marlon Fulop and Roy O'Donovan also face a permanent exit from Sunderland.

  Bruce's assistant Eric Black visited Estudiantes' £8million-rated striker Mauro Boselli in Argentina. Bruce wants Tottenham defender Alan Hutton and Lyon's John Mensah, but has denied claims he is about to sign Egypt player Ahmed Al-Muhammadi.

  The manager said David Meyler's cruciate injury from last weekend is the 'worst case scenario' for the young Irishman.

  Midfielder Jack Colback will play at Wolves this weekend with Lee Cattermole also out with a shoulder injury and Ghana captain Mensah missing with back problems.
