Anfield old boys: Liverpool have struggled without new Real Madrid duo Xabi Alonso (left) and Alvaro Arbeloa
Fernando Torres claims Liverpool’s campaign was doomed even before it began, blaming the departure of key players and the failure to recruit quality replacements for their disappointing season.
Spelling out his frustration at the loss of Xabi Alonso, Alvaro Arbeloa and
Sami Hyypia,
Torres insisted the club had become ‘messed up’ after the trio
left last summer.
Torres said: ‘After a good season last year, the team needed certain
reinforcements and to keep the squad together, but circumstances dictated we had
to sell and
everything got messed up.
‘Sami may not have played every week but he was 10 out of 10 on and off the pitch and players like Xabi are very rare.
‘He was the team’s engine and you know that when you change an engine it takes time to work again.’
He added: ‘We were so far off the top of the table so quickly. That killed us psychologically and has stopped us changing the situation.’
he's right you know?
he god dam right
....
Well talk about the spanish selling the spanish out lol
well, the outflux of players from EPL this season is the reason why the UCL semis may not see any English team since the 2002/2003 season..
Err... Rafa actually replaced Xabi Alonso, Alvaro Arbeloa and Sami Hyypia with more expensive options in Glen Johnson, Aquaman and Kyrgiakos.
Alonso, Arbeloa and Hyypia went for like £34.5 million while the recruitment of Johnson, Aquilani and Kyrgiakos cost like £39 million. So quite unfair to say they didn't get reinforcement, Just that the reinforcement they recruited are below those they sold i guess...
i think if they ever have a textbook for football managers, rafa would be an example of fail.. along with people like Souness and Keane
Nice trading =) alonso is the midfield spark, without him really.....

Tosic has yet to really prove himself, why label him a big blunder?

signing, yes...
performance, MUFC always delivered something... and they never fought for 4th place in recent history...
i think LFC may find their 6th place in danger too if they screw up some more.. they're just 1 point ahead of villa and they've played a game more

precisely, & he did start for MU a few times, and did not perform to expectations hence the loan to get him games, in preparation for the WC/. To be fair to him, he may do a Ronaldo, and transform after his loan. but the odds are stacked against him.
Pardon me, if he turns out good in the end. :)

Not true... They all were traded in the same season so no excuse of time difference... A good example is like Thomas Vermaelen and Kolo Toure... Bought for $10m and sold for $15m.
Unleash Aquilani for the last 10 mins of the remaining few games!
lol more like run to the pitch and game over
problem is with rafael. not alonso's departure.

I kinda like him,his style of play, his freekicks and he does resemble a young Kewell.
Hahaha
Then i should tell torres this: WHat do you make of manchester united's dual loss of goals machine C Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez who have at least 60goals between them in their last seasons with manutd?
Did united fail in dramatic fashion like pool did?...No.Who to blame?

The difference here is that Man U did get a few decent replacements, like Valencia. Even Owen, for all of his injuries, had quite considerable utility when it really mattered.
Also, the other Man U squad members have been quick to fill the gap left behind by Tevez and Ronaldo and to work harder and in a more cohesive manner. Rooney has flourished, and Park Ji-Sung has become a strong utility player.
The real problem is the lack of depth in the Liverpool squad. Simply put, Alonso and Arbeloa were so pivotal to the Liverpool squad that whatever else they had couldn't replace these two.
rafa is the problem. he change and switch players and position every game, its hard to gel and plus you sell 2 good players, its very difficult to expect the team to perform consistently

Sir Alex does that a lot too...difference is:
unlike Rafa who:
Of coz, there are more reasons to Liverpool's failures but it is mostly the fault of Rafa for them being in the state they are; going backwards instead of forwards.
As they say in the RedCafe....KRAP.

Torres is just using the old trick by the ex Liverpool players.
That is to speak out against Ah Ben.
Ah Ben hate players to challenge his decision and will offload the players immediately.
Maybe Torres is trying his luck to spite Ah Ben so that he is sold "against" his wishes.
last season was his best chance to win BPL, having lost only 2 in the BPL, but having like 10 draws is really unacceptable. if he can convert 2-3 of those draws into wins, then liverpool was the champion for last season. some of the draws were at home against the likes of fulham. its his negativity and he likes to play 2 defensive midfielders like lucas and mascherano so as to protect the back 4 esp in away games.
