Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has been surprisingly named new captain of Nigeria.
The 22-year-old will lead the Super Eagles at the World Cup finals after replacing veteran Portsmouth striker Kanu, 33.
“Mikel is a young player and a good player with a great future,” said Nigeria coach Lars Lagerback. “I think he already shows great promise. As we go into the future, it is important to get a fresh, young face to be the team leader.
“He knows it is a big responsibility. I am sure he will have no problems with the rest of the team.”
