An interesting incident in 1990

  The first Gulf War started soon after Italia 90. An European was living in iraq and decided to leave the country. While he was crossing the border, he was arrested on the assumption that he was an American spy. The european could not speak Arabic, and after intense interrogation, he just wanted to prove that he was not an American. So he started to say the names of footballers such as pele and maradona. The Iraqi guards disregarded him as they claimed even football non-observers would know these names. The european man then said Schillaci. The Iraqis thought that no Americans would know who Schillaci was, so they believed that the man was not American and released him.

  I don't believe the story. Why would the iraqis know who schillaci is if it is assumed that the americans don't know.

  Middle Eastern countries are quite big on football.

  Think Iran, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman

  And of course, didnt you know Iraq won the 2007 Asian Cup? The cup which our own Lions didnt even come close to qualifying...

  Iraq beat Australia and drew with South Korea during that tournament.
