Rooney is doing in a team who lost their best player, Messi is doing it in a stable environment.

I vote for Messi. He is simply the best player. Rooney can be very dull sometimes, but messi wun.

I agree with IceFatBoy.
Messi, the ball is glued to his feet! He is playing alongside Xavi, Iniesta and Yaya Youre / Keita. With Xavi and Iniesta feeding balls to him and Toure and Keita to clear the mess, Messi has a dream team to work along. Not to discount his contributions of 8 goals in 4 matches, Messi is on fire at the moment with10 assists, 34 goals in 39 matches.
United just sold Ronaldo and decided against signing Tevez. Fergie has to push Rooney to the middle to fill the gap and boy did he surpassed expectations. Many punters, before the season begun, has written off United and Rooney is defying every odds stacked against and is proving everyone wrong with him single-handedly guide United to victory with 33 goals in 39 matches.

Messi is a good player but I also belief he is doing very well partly because he has the years of playing together with the quality Barce players... The likes of Iniesta, Xavi in midfield and some others have help his game a lot. But we have seen when he goes to play for his country, he isn't as good as when he plays for Barce...

Although I agree that messi plays in a team full of class, but a simple search on youtube shows the quality in his goals. and its self-made class. I am beginning to think messi can go on to beat pele/maradona/zidane as the world best player ever. And given the competitive nature of the game now, its not easy to do what he is doing now. Rooney's goals this season are mostly headers. Sure, he gets in the positions to score so credit to him, but without the crosses from his teammates he can't do much. So I would be inclined to say Rooney's success in scoring goals is dependable on his teammates rather than Messi.
Perhaps, people might argue they are 2 different types of players, but come on, we are not comparing Van Der Sar and Van Nistelrooy here. haha.
Personally, I don't really get excited out of goals per game ratio. I get orgasms out of quality per goal ratio. That's my take for football.
