AGONY ... a distraught David Beckham is comforted
Becks was in tears as he left the AC Milan dressing room after rupturing his left Achilles tendon in the 1-0 win over Chievo. Club doctor Jean-Pierre Meerseman, who is booked on the flight to Scandinavia with Becks, confirmed: "The World Cup is finished for David Beckham."
Milan boss Leonardo added: "David felt the muscle move up which is a typical symptom of a ruptured Achilles. It is a massive blow."
Midfielder Beckham, England's most capped outfield player with 115 appearances, suffered the injury seven minutes from time in the Serie A clash at the San Siro.
He signalled frantically to the Milan bench, pointing to his ankle, as he was about to kick a ball unchallenged.
A Sky Italia TV touchline reporter heard him tell doctors: "It's broken, it's broken". It is a massive blow to England's World Cup hopes and a huge shock for boss Fabio Capello.
The Italian phoned the ex-Three Lions skipper straight after the game to console him. Beckham was determined to play a part, however small, in South Africa. And he arrived at Milan for a second loan spell from LA Galaxy in a bid to play himself into Capello's 23-man squad.
The England legend put on a brave face for the cameras as he left the San Siro on crutches. He was due to spend the night at Milan's Principe di Savoia hotel before flying to Finland this morning.
Becks will be examined by Dr Orava with the operation set to take place this evening or tomorrow morning. Orava is an Achilles specialist and treats Milan's players who suffer similar injuries. But it could take up to a year for Beckham to fully recover.
Consultant sports physician Dr Tom Crisp said: "The chances of him being fit to play at the World Cup are non-existent."
Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani said: "The satisfaction of the victory is overshadowed by the pain of David's injury."
Team-mate Ignazio Abate added: "David was in tears. He didn't say very much."
Substitute Clarence Seedorf scored a stoppage-time winner to lift AC Milan to victory over Chievo at the San Siro on Sunday night.
The Dutch midfielder entered the game with 11 minutes remaining and knocked in the only goal of the match to pull the Rossoneri to within one point of leaders Inter Milan.
But the contest was marred by an injury to David Beckham, who went off in the latter stages after Milan had used all three substitutes with an apparent Achilles tendon injury.
The result is just what Milan fans needed after their elimination from the Champions League in midweek at Manchester United.
Hoping to capitalise on Inter's 3-1 defeat at Catania on Friday, Milan had dodged a bullet when Chievo's Andrea Mantovani hit the crossbar in the first half.
The hosts then had a chance to take a 57th minute lead when Ronaldinho struck the ball inside the area past Chievo goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino only to see his shot smash off the post.
David Beckham returned to the starting line-up having come off the bench in Milan's 4-0 defeat at Old Trafford.
The hosts had the first opportunity early on with Ronaldinho's right-footed strike from the edge of the area going wide.
Shortly after, Beckham needed treatment after Chievo's Giampiero Pinzi accidentally caught the England midfielder with his boot. Beckham had a cut on his face but was remained in the game.
In the 18th minute, Beckham was unable to bring down Ronaldinho's cross towards the area as Milan missed a good opportunity to break the deadlock.
Midway through the first half, Andrea Pirlo's curled free-kick went wide. The hosts continued to press forward and shortly after, Marco Boriello latched onto Beckham's cross and his header was saved by Sorrentino.
Clarence Seedorf toasts his injury time winner for AC Milan against Chievo
Milan almost went ahead shortly after the re-start but Ronaldinho's header from a corner-kick went wide. Ronaldinho was unlucky not to put his team ahead soon after when his right-foot volley beat Sorrentino but struck the far post.
On the hour mark, Ronaldinho fed Borriello inside the area and his powerful strike was parried away by Sorrentino.
With five minutes remaining, Beckham did well to control Ronaldinho's pass inside the area but missed the target. But veteran Seedorf came to the rescue in stoppage time.
He got behind Ambrosini's pass and hit the ball with his right foot into the top left corner to beat Sorrentino. While Milan celebrated, Chievo walked off the field having failed to claim a valuable point on the road as they look to secure their top flight status.
Milan are now only 1 point behind Inter having played the same amount of games.
"Our Hero Has Fallen"
David Beckham (Level 25) has fallen...
Anyway, even if he does make it to World Cup, he will be on the bench, never in the starting lineup. Not a big loss to England since they wont get pass the first knockout.
As far as I am concern his World Cup dreams ended in 1994 when he got a red card for something stupid ,England had a dream team then and the best chance of winning the cup for a second time.Anyways he is past his prime so take it as a good face saving excuse for him instead of watching him play like a twart in his final cup appearance.

It is always sad to see a willing mind but weak body. The reality of being old. We can extent our retirement age, keep being healthly and fit but please be realistic with your expectations.
