Chelsea have reopened negotiations with Nicolas Anelka over a contract extension which would see the France international stay at Stamford Bridge until 2013.
Discussions with Anelka's representatives stalled last month over his desire for a £40,000-a-week pay hike which would take his weekly earnings to £120,000.
With chief executive Ron Gourlay under instructions to reduce outgoings, a compromise figure will still have to be reached if Anelka is to stay beyond the summer of 2012 when his contract expires.
New deal: Nicolas Anelka has demanded a £40,000-a-week pay hike
News that Chelsea's hierarchy are ready to negotiate with Anelka will come as a further blow to Joe Cole. There has yet to be any movement on a new deal for Cole whose current contract expires in the summer.
End of the road? Joe Cole's contract runs out at the end of the season
Meanwhile, Ashley Cole is due to return from a spell in a sports injuries clinic in France this weekend to continue his rehabilitation from a broken ankle.
Frank Arnesen is to hold talks with Chelsea youngster Miroslav Stoch next week after his impressive form on loan at FC Twente.
In the end they will pay him also lah cos it makes no sense not to pay him and lose him for nothing... And to make it worse, they may have to pay even more to bring in someone who is able to play well enough for the team... And what if they get another Mikel at $16m or Malouda at $13.5m? Better pay Joe cos he is proven to be able to do the job...
should chelsea decide to let joe leave, rafa must immediately, book an air ticket, go over to london, get joe to play for us.
maybe liverpool also cannot match his wage demands.
Liverpool sure can one... If they can pay Glen Johnson $139k per week why not $120k for Joe? Don't forget, Joe will come free, no transfer fee required... So in actual fact, his first 2 and a half years are like free if you factor in a transfer fee if they have to pay... Joe will be good for Pool, United, City and even Arsenal, at least it help them increase one more English player in their squad. Actually to me, Joe seems better for the kind of game the gunners play...
