Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill believes referee Phil
Dowd cost his side a piece of silverware, after losing 2-1 to
Manchester United in the League Cup final at Wembley Stadium.
United defender Nemanja Vidic fouled Gabriel Agbonlahor to give
away a penalty, but Dowd failed to produce a red card despite the
Serbia international being the last man, which should have seen him
sent off by default.
James Milner stepped up, scored, and consequently gave the Villans
an early lead. But strikes from Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney
ensured the Red Devils retained the trophy.
"It was plain for all to see," said O'Neill, according to
The Sun. "It's an inexplicable decision. There was a
goalscoring opportunity in the area.
He continued: "It was a mistake from an otherwise very fine
referee. "There's no other decision. It's the major point of the
match.
"Anybody would be wondering how he could come to any other
conclusion.
"It doesn't matter whether it's the first or 90th minute. It is
straightforward - so straightforward it is incredible.
"It's hard to take. I thought we played splendidly, particularly in
the first half.
"I'm disappointed for the team but they're resilient, they're
strong, they're young and they will fight back."
Contrary to his gaffer's views, Villa defender Richard Dunne
insisted it would have made no difference had Sir Alex Ferguson's
men been a man short, since they managed without any significant
problems at Villa Park earlier in the season in such a situation.
But the former Celtic boss vehemently disagreed with his
player.
"Richard's a great lad - and I totally disagree with him," O'Neill
added. "It's a different game, you are talking about Wembley and
all that goes with Wembley on one particular match.
"I'd have to disagree. It's not often I disagree with him this
season," he concluded.
