Head boy: Wayne Rooney nods in another goal against West Ham last night
Another brace from Wayne Rooney last night continued his blistering form in front of goal for Manchester United.
The double against West Ham took his tally of Premier League goals to 23 so far this term - a number which already betters the end of season totals of previous top-scorers Nicolas Anelka last year and Didier Drogba in 2007.
Over the last 10 years Rooney's total after 27 games is only just bettered by Cristiano Ronaldo in 2008 and Kevin Phillips in 2000, both of whom broke the magical 30 goal barrier by the end of the season.
Sharpshooter: Didier Drogba
Prolific: Kevin Phillips
And with 10 league games still remaining for United, you wouldn't put it past Rooney to finish with more strikes than both.
Here are the top goalscorers from the last 10 years, and their records after 27 games.
How Rooney compares with Premier League hotshots over the last 10 years
Season - Top scorer - Total goals - Goals scored after 27 games
2009-2010 - Wayne Rooney 23* - 23
2008-2009 - Nicolas Anelka 19 - 15
2007-2008 - Cristiano Ronaldo 31 - 25
2006-2007 - Didier Drogba 20 - 11
2005-2006 - Thierry Henry 27 - 22
2004-2005 - Thierry Henry 25 - 19
2003-2004 - Thierry Henry 30 - 21
2002-2003 - Ruud van Nistelrooy 25 - 15
2001-2002 - Thierry Henry 24 - 20
2000-2001 - Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink 23 - 16
1999-2000 - Kevin Phillips 30 - 25
ronaldo's departure really gave him a big boost.

shearer? this century or last?
Ronney is in no way a great goal scoring striker up to this very day.. he is good with his football brain even thou just at this tender age of his, he is very mobile and track back to help out in whatever dept the team needs an extra man, but his main strength would be to partner a sharp goal scoring striker like those in the mould of Shearer, Gary Linker, Andy Cole, their former Holland striker, and other 9 yard striker.. but i always have the inpression that Owen would be able to provide a good partnership for him.. and i dun see how they can be alike, one is a typical 2nd striker while the other is a out and out striker..
Simply put, his best position would be as second striker behind a targetman, like Berbatov. But he has performed his centre-forward (or rather lone striker) role to great effect in recent games.
But with the rumours about Ferguson possibly making a move for Villa and using Berbatov as a paperweight, could we see a Villa/Rooney partnership. But I would rather have some guy who is younger lar. Villa is like 28/29 years old?
I do hope that Rooney can break the Premier League scoring record in a season. Currently held by Ronaldo (07/08) and Alan Shearer (dunno which season)
i think Andy Cole might have hold some kinda records when he is in Newcastle.. slightly better then that of Shearer if i'm not wrong.. and for those who would probably be checking out the stats in the www.. i think forget it, its football which we are talking about, doesnt really matters even if you;re to make slight mistake about.. we're human playing a human game we called football
