WITH Fifa demanding $40 million, not $100 million, for the football
World Cup broadcast rights, Singaporeans do not see the need to pay an
arm and a leg in subscription fees to watch the matches.
Earlier, most fans in Singapore were expecting to pay up to $100 to
telcos SingTel and StarHub, who are jointly bidding for the rights, to
watch the one-month tournament, starting on June 11.
Football lovers have also applauded the Football Association of
Singapore's (FAS) decision to talk to Fifa and iron out a deal for the
telcos.
Said Roland Seow, a 54-year-old property agent who is prepared to fork
out a maximum of $50: 'It is a reasonable one-time fee for one month.
'At the end of the day, I feel that we should not be held to ransom by
Fifa. If the telcos cannot win the rights, then I'm prepared not to
watch the World Cup.
'The FAS is doing good because it is the football authority in Singapore and it should interfere if it has the influence.'
NO....Fifa is doing daylight robbery!!!
40 mil is still more than a 160% increase starhub paid for the last world cup...it's just ridiculous....
I blame both Singtel and FIFA.
Singtel for their ridiculous EPL bid that got us in this mess. Why can't they, like, just focus on niche programming and just provide what Starhub doesn't already provide?
FIFA for being so damn bloody greedy. I sure feel like giving Sepp Blatter a great big kick in his Michael Ballack for selling out on The Beautiful Game.

This whole incident has just blown out of Singtel and Starhub's faces and show the lack of transparency in this bidding nonsense in Sg... Earlier we were told or made to believed Singtel's bid for the EPL was $400million all this while and Fifa wanted $100 million for the WC2010... I guess its either Fifa wasn't pleased to being made use of and came out to give reason why they wanted what and not the $100 million published by our local newspapers so as to con us further... (though the source is not official as well) or someone realised the figure $100m was too ridiculous to belief and adjusted it to be more believable...
It is amazing that they can come up with a figure of $100 million from $40m in the first place... I must say even at $40m, i am suspecting it right now cos if Sg's have say, 250,000 subscriber to sports with Starhub, it will still cost each $160 just to pay for the rights not including the other cost to the provider... Sure there could be some commercial returns but there will also be manpower cost, equipment cost and other cost incur as well... not to mention the profits they expect to generate from this too...
To me, this whole issue is just crazy... Someone wants to benefit from this big time... Maybe more than just one party so the big con job to get us to belief...
Now I am even sceptical of the sum Singtel reported to have bid for the EPL cos Malaysia's Astro bid only came up to $800 Ringgit which works out to around S$332,800. Sg with a smaller population base, Singtel bid $400m ? $350m ?
I feel if the price is more than $50, I may not want to subscript out of principle. And those thinking of trying your luck with Indon and RTM channels can forget it, Our guys here will do their duty and block the signal like they did back in 2006. You can be sure of that...
$50 ? Hahahahahaha , CCK Sunshine place got SCV box , i can see there .
If not , Bt Batok West Ave 5 , Blk 359 also can see for free .
whatever it is, live stream is still here for us
fly to SA to watch
Singtel and its cousin Starhub (Temasek) are trying to tell you who the bad guys are.

Yes sir, they will give you a "subsidy" next time when you have to pay $100 to watch the World Cup.
