  ARSENE WENGER could break his own golden rule by offering 32-year-old William Gallas more than a 12-month contract.

  Arsenal boss Wenger has always refused to hand any player over 30 anything other than a short-term deal.

  But with Gallas free to leave for nothing at the end of the season, the Frenchman has hinted he may have to change his policy to persuade the defender to stay.

  Wenger said: "For a striker over 32 you can give only a year. But for a defender, we'll see.

  "Gallas has been amazing the whole season. I have big respect for what he has done.

  "He does what you dream of as a manager — he does not talk and plays well."
