Tottenham make intentions clear in pursuit of West Ham’s Upson

Tottenham have launched an £8million bid for West Ham United defender Matthew Upson.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has a defensive crisis at the moment and needs to bring in a quality centre-half if the club is to make the top four and qualify for the Champions League.

With West Ham’s dire financial situation, it means a January move for the former Arsenal man is a possibility but Redknapp will have to use players as collateral to complete any dealings.

David Bentley and Alan Hutton have been named as players who could potentially exit White Hart Lane if Upson was to come the other way but Redknapp would be wary that the club spent upwards of £15million on winger Bentley just 18 months ago.

Manchester City are also interested in Upson, especially after the injury to Joleon Lescott who is expected to miss up to eight weeks.

West Ham United believe Manchester United will come in for Matthew Upson in January.

The Times says Upson changed his agent a year ago in the hope of a move to a top-four club and is still agitating for a move. Liverpool remain keen on the player after showing interest in the summer, when they were unable to raise the funds.

They face the same problem now but West Ham may decide to try and create an auction for Upson in a bid to raise money to strengthen the squad.

They believe that Manchester United, who have had up to six defenders out injured recently, and Tottenham Hotspur could be interested. Harry Redknapp has four established centre backs but the Tottenham manager may be prepared to sell Michael Dawson. Alan Hutton, the Spurs right back, could also move to Upton Park on loan as part of the deal.

I actually had this feeling as well, that Upson goes to Old Trafford. And Rio will just continue his downhill spiral and eventually leaves Untied. Gut feeling though.

ya buy upson. rio been injury prone for the last few seasons. I think the next season will be the same and he will be out for indefinitely. buy upson and he can partner vidic or evans. even if rio is not injured, upson can be backup and fergie can also freshen things up when there is a cl in midweek.
