  Liverpool to focus on prising Forlan away from Atletico Madrid

  Atletico Madrid ace Diego Forlan is a top target for Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez.

  The People says Benitez has also asked about another ex-United striker, Ruud van Nistelrooy.

  But Atletico Madrid raider Forlan, 30, is his first choice for a January swoop, although Benitez would have to stump up around £15million.

  Forlan is desperate to leave his club, who are struggling near the foot of La Liga and also out of the Champions League.

  The Uruguay international was not a resounding success during two years at Old Trafford but since going to Spain has been prolific for Villarreal and Atletico, shooting both clubs into the Champions League.

  Forlan joined Atletico when Fernando Torres left them for Liverpool in 2007, but he could end up partnering the Spain international at Anfield.

  Uruguayan hot-shot Diego Forlan has been linked with a surprise return to the Premier League.
  

  The Atletico Madrid forward, a consistent threat in front of goal in La Liga, had an arduous time convincing Manchester United fans that he was the ideal partner for box-playing striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.

  However, that has not deterred Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez who, according to a report in The People, is eager to bolster his firepower by bringing the two-time Pichichi winner to Anfield.

  Forlan, 30, is expected to cost upwards of £15 million, but that is a price Benitez is allegedly willing to pay after seeing his side rendered impotent when Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard lay injured.

  Atletico Madrid are floundering at the depths of La Liga, and have also been eliminated from the Champions League, making a possible move back to the Premier League more attractive.

  Forlan was acquired by Atleti in 2007, following the sale of Torres to Liverpool; however, it appears he may now partner the man he replaced at the Vicente Calderon.

  which manager in the right mind would leave a club knowing he have penalties to pay..
  liverpool is stuck with him..
