UP IN SMOKE ... Everton's proposed new stadium will not be built in Kirkby
Both clubs have previously been reluctant to go down the route of sharing a stadium. But Tofees chief executive Robert Elstone has revealed Everton are not against the idea if it makes financial sense.
He said: "It's certainly one of the options that we will need to cover. "A shared stadium is perhaps an option if it's affordable.
"We have to look at where we can raise money, because potentially Liverpool will have to obviously contribute to that, and Liverpool City Council perhaps might need to find some money.
"Our history is one of creativity and innovation and if we are the first major English club to look at sharing then we're not scared of making those decisions."
The Toffees hoped to team up with Tesco to create a new 50,000-seater ground in Kirkby, replacing Goodison Park. But the government have ruled out the plans, claiming it would have a massive impact on local businesses.
Elstone said: "We're bitterly disappointed with the decision. "We felt that - along with our two partners - we had compiled and presented a most compelling case for the Destination Kirby project.
"We said all along that we not only believed the project to be deliverable but that it would have proved to be hugely beneficial for both Everton and the people of Knowsley.
"We will now regroup and carefully consider the options which are open to us. "I feel I must stress that we do remain totally committed to finding a new home for our football club. "The hunt for that new home will now intensify."
