The Malaise of Liverpool started in 1991

Kenny Daglish did not renew the core players of Barnes, Beardsley, Rush, Hansen, Grobelaar, Steve Nicol etc, after winning their last league title in 1990. In 1991, he brought in David Speedie (dun ask me why he bought him), who was 31 then. obviously he wouldnt be an outright replacement for Rush, who is going into his 30s. He then quitted in mid season in 1991. The liverpool board appointed Graeme Souness, who was Rangers manager then. The rot really started when Souness came in and sell a whole bunch of players, like beardsley to everton, steve staunton to villa, steve mahon etc and brought in the likes of mark wright, saunders, nigel clough, paul stewart, mark walters etc. He won the fa cup in 1992 and then resigned in 1994 before the board made another dud appointment, roy evans in 1994 as replacement. he won the league cup in 1995 while man utd kept winning titles after titles. in 1997-98 season, the board brought in gerard houllier as co manager before evans was given the boot and houllier appointed as the sole manager.
Although Houllier won the treble of cups in 2001, league, fa cup and uefa cup, the distance between them and utd is just too great. in 2004 - 2005 season, Houllier was sacked and Rafa was brought in and won the CL in his first season.
in a nutshell, the rot started when daglish resigned in 1991 and a series of dud appointments started the rot. instead of rebuilding its ageing squad after winning the 1990 league title, the board appointed a series of dud managers and money was wasted on dud players like clough, stewart etc. simply Liverpool has wasted so much time and money on disastrous appointments and flop players, while its hated rival begun their ascent in 1993 to present. seems like rafa is not the manager who is capable to bring liverpool to its former glory. if he is sacked and replaced by another dud appointment, I am afraid history repeat itself.

i agree. Every team has its ups and downs.

The real problem was they didn't know how to renew the team... Getting rid of those old players was not exactly wrong but I feel too many at one time may be rather questionable as so many out at one time also means many new ones in too...
Many clubs success don't last very long as players on average last about 5 to 6 yrs in the top level... And once they reach 30, you will have to replace them... But rebuilding a new team all over again is a very difficult thing for any manager...
And I do believe Graeme Souness was the architech of Liverpool's downfall...
