Scandal between Mclaren and Ferrari

Formula 1 fans, i bet you heard about the Scandal between Mclaren and Ferrari... Whats your opinion? do you think Mclaren is winning because they really obtained and used ferrari's information?

The real reason for Ferrari's troubles was the downtime they suffered when their wind tunnel failed. They lost plenty of development time in the process.
If McLaren incorporated bits of Ferrari in their design they would not be so confident about co-operating with the FIA, though it doesn't mean they can't benefit in other ways depending on the nature of the information received. -
My understanding is that the documents were allegedly passed over in April this year, way too late for it to explain mclaren's current form.
On the other hand, if next year's car is a grid-killer, I can forsee Stepneygate being raised a lot in 2008. -

If what Gendanken said is true, then yeah, its not the espionage that makes Mclaren perform so well. Seems like we really got a F1 prodigy here. Is Hamilton in steroids or what, he cant keep winning like that man, he is still so young.. if he keeps winning like that, for the next decade or so... its all about Hamilton man..

I wouldn't go as far as saying that Hamilton's a storm in a teacup, but a lot of it is hype. As KB observed in the other thread, what he's learned so far is no indicator of how good he'll eventually be, and we need to keep in mind that he has been pretty much raised by McLaren over the last ten years or so, so the advantage may be the upbringing rather than any inherent qualities.

We shall see over this season then! It seems that after the depature of Schumacher, F1 seems more interesting when Schumacher is not winning all the time.
Lets look at the top four (Hamilton, Massa, Raikkonen and Alonso) and how they compete with each other. -

The tale takes another twist as Honda revealed that Stepney approached Nick Fry for a job early in the season, and then returned in June with Coughlan. They did not offer any confidential information to the Honda boss, who then alerted Ferrari and McLaren.

Yeah, the scandal continues, seems like there is more to it.
"The story moved forward on Friday afternoon when Honda put out a statement saying that Nick Fry, the team's chief executive officer, met Nigel Stepney and McLaren chief designer Mike Coughlan "with a view to investigating job opportunities within the Honda Racing F1 Team."

Mike Coughlan is the chief designer at McLaren and Stepney is Ferrari's head of performance development and ex-chief mechanic. The two of them used to work together when the former was at the firm that designed and produced chassis for Benetton and Ferrari. -
Hmm, now it seems that Honda might be implicated in the widening scandal.
Anyway, MacLaren are under investigation and may lose their hard-earned points if found guilty of improper conduct. -

"Representatives of Vodafone McLaren Mercedes have been requested to appear before an extraordinary meeting of the FIA World Motor Sport Council in Paris on Thursday, July 26, 2007," said an FIA statement.
"The team representatives have been called to answer a charge that between March and July 2007, in breach of Article 151c of the International Sporting Code, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes had unauthorised possession of documents and confidential information belonging to Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro, including information that could be used to design, engineer, build, check, test, develop and/or run a 2007 Ferrari Formula One car." -

McLaren have been let off with a warning that if more evidence surfaces, they'll be disqualified from the world championship.
“The World Motor Sports Council is satisfied that Vodafone McLaren Mercedes was in possession of confidential Ferrari information and is therefore in breach of article 151c of the International Sporting Code," said an FIA statement.
"However, there is insufficient evidence that this information was used in such a way as to interfere improperly with the FIA Formula One World Championship.
"We therefore impose no penalty.
“But if it is found in the future that the Ferrari information has been used to the detriment of the championship, we reserve the right to invite Vodafone McLaren Mercedes back in front of the WMSC where it will face the possibility of exclusion from not only the 2007 championship but also the 2008 championship.
“The WMSC will also invite Mr Stepney and Mr Coughlan to show reason why they should not be banned from international motor sport for a lengthy period and the WMSC has delegated authority to deal with this matter to the legal department of the FIA."
