Renault team principal Flavio Briatore has criticised McLaren for signing world champion Fernando Alonso from under his nose.
McLaren surprised the entire sport by announcing they had scooped up Alonso for the 2007 season while the Spaniard still had a year to run on his contract
But Briatore, who also acts as Alonso's manager, stated after the announcement that the Spaniard had struck the deal to join McLaren in 2007 by himself and without assistance from the Italian.
"The way McLaren handled the issue was not pleasant," Briatore told news agency AFP. "They should have shown more respect."
McLaren's Alonso deal has sent shockwaves through the paddock and fired speculation that Renault may even be considering a withdrawal at the end of 2006.
Briatore has his own ideas for the reason behind the move though.
"Ron hasn't won the championship for seven years so he probably just wanted to bring some good news," he said.
Gedanken
It's a vote of no confidence in Renault. With the rumblings that the Frogs are getting out in 07 or 08, so they may not be a good bet for Alonso if they're winding down in preparation for a pullout.
In any case, the writing's on the wall. The second half of the season was a matter of Alonso/Renault defending against significantly faster Macs. Alonso's probably betting that McLaren are finally on the verge of getting the hang of reliability, and when they've got their act together they'll be the best bet.
I'd question the wisdom of announcing the move so far ahead of time (although it'll do McLaren's sponsor search no end of good), but ultimately it's a smart move on Alonso's part.
Betting odds are that Kimi will go to Ferrari, but there's the Schumacher conundrum to solve. If Ferrari performs this year, Kimi will have a good team to go to but will have to put up with being number 2. If Ferrari doesn't perform, Scummaker will clear out but that'll leave Kimi with a dog of a team.
