Chop Mui Lee Bakery, a traditional teochew bakery which as been in business making traditional pastries for over 70 years will be closing shop this year as the owners retire.
They told me with a tinge of regret that they could not find anyone who would apprentice with them and take over the shop. Since they were getting on in age, they decided to close shop this year and retire.
They also lamented that the other traditional teochew bakery in Singapore was also closing shop this year for the same reason.
Singapore will be much poorer for the loss of these traditional bakeries
The shop owner
Their very traditional signboard
The shop front
The counter
The kitchen where everything is still done by hand
The baker putting pastries into the oven which they have used for decades
Behind the counter where everything is packed by hand
The traditional cooling racks which have been used for decades
This will be the last year I will be enjoying their mooncakes.
Alas...
sad.........
End of an era - Chop Mui Lee Bakery
Mui Lee is a popular cake shop for teochew wedding cakes. Now is history already
Pls let me die before the last of these shops closes.
My father-in-law insisted on this Mui Lee as our wedding gifts when we send our invitation cards to the elders.
Mui Lee used to be in Chin Swee Road?
I remember that fateful day I ate their 1kg mooncake in one sitting.
ehhh... this mui lee shop looks like a certain shop in commonwealth crescent...
where is it located at?

Why can't they just close down one!

I was gonna say the same. Use to go there for their tao sar pia....sweet/salty. This kind of traditional shops and practice is sadly dwindling in sgp.
Hmm this year....i hope late late if must.
I have a friend who volunteers to help run it!
tink he is joking!
That is similiar to throw marketing credits worth SGD $150,000 into the drain just by closing the business. *sigh~* I heard this before, but have not tried their food.
there's still chin mee chin at east coast road ......
