I don't go to PAP rallies cos you already know what they are offering, stability and predictability for the next 5 years at least. fine if people think taking out a few ministers or putting in some opposition mps would serve as a wake up call, but if you think about it, they'll just be there to make noise ... I have been following every parliament's debates, these fellows have only asked a handful of questions in total, low thia khiang blinked when it came to mas selamat, and sylvia only spoke up about the minister's pay on the last session of parliament, right before the elections ... it's more to sell herself to the people if you ask me ...
I once thought the WP was different this time round ... till I attended their rallies ... they are no different from the other rabble like the SDP if you ask me ... and then they throw up someone like chen show mao ...... it'll be a sad sad day if we exchange our foreign minister for basically a foreigner with a red passport, someone who've been away for 30 years ....
of course, it's "cool" to be in the opposition right now, with youtube jingles, starwar clips, etc, coming out every day ... young first time voters I guess ... the democratic process requires a certain maturity and responsibility for it to work, looking at what's happening in singapore this elections, all the online activities, slurs on facebook etc, I'd say, 3 elections down the road, and we'll be the same as taiwan or the phillippines ...
Funny, I know of ppl who said the same thing as fatum...
But they change/swap opposition with PAPs...

Frankly speaking, rallies are for rousing emotions and not the best place for dialogue. I talked to SPP's GRC team* in person and they appear sincere and did not sidestep my questions. They're not planning to pluck money from the sky and know some limitations with their proposals.
*That's the younger men I'm talking about. CST's name which is bandied around a lot like a brand but they're not hiding behind it like NSP and Nicole.

I was just going to ask you about something you said before .... something about young singaporeans nowadays .... it's all about "what can I get, what can I expect, what can you give me" .... something like that, do you remember nic ?
I can't remember exactly what you said, but it struck me when I look at this election's campaign ....

Yeah.... rallies are really more like mass cheer events.
Seeing some of the rallies on Youtube, without pointing fingers at any one party, 'Nuremberg 1934' somehow comes to mind.....

I said, "What are my rights", "I'm a victim" and "It's not my responsibility" are the three statements that define our generation, not just here but elsewhere in the world too. That famous JFK quote doesn't resonate anymore.

thanks nic .....
and I guess that describes so succintly a large sector of the electorate this elections ...

Let me add or modify the 1st part...
Nowadays the young gen cant differientiate between rights, previlage and power...
Edited: Suddenly Spiderman comes into mind "Where there is great power, there is great responsiblity"... They can fascinate abt great power but cant seem to be bothered abt responsiblity part...
here's a telling example of what I meant by the unthinking electorate.
http://sgforums.com/forums/3518/topics/429540
mob mentality takes over .... everyone is so ready with a cynical soundbite, everyone is so ready to believe the worst ......
suddenly, sites like sgelections, the online citizen, and our friend atobe's temasek review becomes "credible" sources of quotes and utterences by the MIW ...
I once thought there would be enough thinking, rational people to prevent any freak accidents, for me to be safe from waking up and finding singapore really screwed ....
now, I'm no longer sure ...

ahhh, dun worry fatum... I dun visit those sites...
but if the sources are not credible, they'll be sued in no time
No smoke without fire, they say

Which is why I'm trying to be different by doing my duty as a citizen to make as informed a choice as possible.
Most of the views and videos being shared online pour scorn on their "track record", but I don't want more of the same of certain things in the coming years, such as overcrowding and policies designed to encourage certain ideals. But I don't agree either with 'spend and spend' proposals like SDP's, or the NS reduction (without a complete rethink of how our citizen army is structured and trained) that NSP wants.
TR is closing down anyway
Seriously they're just destroying themselves thinking wat's done oversesas can be repeated here as in policies.
Ours is should be, we go overseas and take look, evaulate and see wat's applicable.
KB, SBS is operating 179A on 7 May
Seriously e PAP govt's attitude has changed in recent years (real recent).
I still remembered writing in 2008 over upgrading e MRT system w/ signalling system upgrade and more MRT trains procurement for the growing population.
Back then it was a NO. Now today whenever I suggested abt things like why can't e govt look into bus - bus transfer system (because e MRT cannot accomodate to everyone's travelling needs during the peak hrs) or some bus service adjusment, feedback is really taken.
It might not be done immediately but changes are in e works.
As far as I know, they're upgrading those bus stops with higher volume of transferring passengers from bus A to bus B into bigger bus stops.

so they'll sue and be accused of high-handedness again ? ...
think about it for a moment, how stupid would it be for this chap to do what he's been accused of, at a moment like this ? ....is it logical ? rational ? ...
regardless, why is it that people are so eagar to believe the worse of the MIW now, and believe the best of the other ? do they even bother to dig a bit more and decide for themselves ? ... we're not talking about some malaysian minister here, that one you can just point and laugh ... but this one directly affects us ... if a candidate's actions are going to affect your preception and how you vote, won't you think it prudent enough to verify the veracity of such claims, whether it's lui tuck yew treating some residents badly during his walkabout, or desmond choo being accused of male chauvinism cos he supposed said all wives must know how to cook, instead of relying on, theonlinecitizen ?

good for you nic, but unfortunately, it looks very much to me like you're a minority ....
one thing is clear ... our poliltical landscape has forever changed with the emergence of such "alternative" media, and not for the better either ... politics shall be a lot more polarized from now on, a lot dirtier, with more wayang and drama and pomp and less concern for what's real and the truth ....
I think it's going to be a slippery slope towards pinoy or taiwanese style circus from here on ....
sometimes these alternative media does screw the news upside down as well like food prices.
They seriously dun read Business Times's commodity future's pages.
lol .... take a look at the thread I posted ....
an idiot with a malformed anchor link is now insinuating that some dark powers have blocked the site .....
see what I mean ? ... everything is the goverment's fault .... *shakes head .....

what does it matter ? ... they know 90% of their readers would not bother checking anything they print anyways ... people who go there are looking for scandals ... it feels too good to be told you're a victim, neh ? ....
I should immortalize kb's 3 sentence quote somewhere ....

rain/sunny/norain = pap fault, student exam result not good = pap fault, cat die = pap fault
Information is everywhere in this era, but validity is perceived by the person receiving it... In this age, most of everyone only believes things they wanted to believe in...
now how come these days got Uni undergrad suicide incidents happening on n off ar??
Can't help but ytd paper said Dr NEH said foreign students caused local students to work harder..

so .... what would you believe ? ...

Me? Different case, different situation, different solution and behaves differently... How to define??? Would u state a scenario? In general would be too broad...
One can do research, and believe his or her research is true... but infact maybe flawed... so how to judge true and false in the first place? There's no world-class CSI nor scene re-enactment for certain issues... nor there are imaginary "what ifs"...
Some ink water sentence: "Man can do what he wants, but he cannot will what he wants"... A person can believe in what he wants, but he cannot control what he wants to believe in... That itself changes from time to time...
I think wat's going on in SB proves it
Question e need of defence and deterrence but dun bother to fight for it
geez

I'll be frank here; I have no issue with attracting truly talented foreign students to get their higher education here. Like it or not, we do need talents to fill in the gaps where needed. If I have to face off with someone more talented than I am, then it's my job to work harder to make up for my lesser talent.
What really pisses me off are foreign students who seem to be here just to make the numbers. Some of this riffraff cannot be called 'talents' by any stretch of imagination. And it seems that any Ahmad, Ah Lim or Muthusamy with a foreign passport instantly becomes a 'foreign talent'.
Back when I was an undergrad, there was this so-called FT student from India who was attached to my project group.
The bloody fool was a total skiver and did not perform his responsibilities to the group. Why? Because he was spending half the time doing part-time modelling.
In the end, we all had enough, and we ganged up on him. We told him in no uncertain terms that our taxes were subsidising his education, and that we would kick his rear end both figuratively and literally if his skiving led to us having poor grades for that project.
I managed to get an internship at last.....after 4 long months of hard search.
