What sort of remedies have you used that appear to be effective? I'm talking about non-harmful remedies like drinking ginger tea on a cold day or using a heat pack to get rid of certain types of muscular pain.
I want to share a self-discovered remedy! Recently, I suffered from a bad case of prickly heat because I've been doing a lot of walking and unfortunately, because it's Summer, I ended up getting very tanned despite using sunblock, and worse, had prickly heat!
I stumbled on a perfect antidote for prickly heat! Use ointment that's used for baby's nappy rash! Choose one that has calamine lotion, zinc and other natural ingredients like almond oil. If it has salicyclic acid, it will help too (active ingredient in pimple creams). I figured, prickly heat is akin to the angry red rashes on babies' bottoms and if it's good enough for baby, it should be good enough for me!
So next time you suffer from prickly heat, remember to use Nappy Rash Cream, and remember that you first heard it from me!
Lying on your tummy can be comforting when suffering from cramps or wind.
For tummy cramps, lying on your tummy with a hot pack in contact with your tummy will also help.
Elastoplast has an adhesive plaster that's self-heating that's good for rheumatic sort of muscle pains.
Oh, on my last trip back from SG, I suffered from indigestion, GERD (Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease), nausea and giddiness for a few months. What really helped to ease the nausea was aromatherapy! A few drops of Essential Oils (Lemon + Peppermint + Eucalyptus) in an electric burner helped tremendously! Other essential oils that work to alleviate nausea include Mandarin and Lime. Rose is very soothing and Ylang Ylang, when used modestly and in combination with other oils, can also be very calming.
For indigestion, what might work for you would be Eno salts. You may also try Ginger Tea or Peppermint Tea. I like to cradle the warm teacup in both hands and slowly inhale the vapours and then sip them slowly. Very therapeutic on top of the symptom-alleviating benefits.
When hit with rheumatic kinda pain (hong sip in Hokkien, Feng1 Si1 in Mandarin), get a hot compress (hot pack that's suitably heated up), place it on the offending spot, grab a towel or small baby's blanket, and wrap the pack around so that it stays firmly on the painful area. Go to bed and avoid getting the fan blowing on that area, better still, stay covered under a light blanket at least, and you'll wake up the next morning, feeling better.
a colleague just taught me to squeeze lemon juice to about 1 tablespoon + few drops of dark soy sauce.. swallow it and few dosages will cure coughs ..
I have yet to try .. but he said he always let his son take when his son get cough ..
so whoever is coughing now, please try and let me know whether it works!
for cough, just abstain from chicken, fried/spicy stuff and drink lots of warm water .....
umeboshi ! ....
Actually, speaking of coughs, have you noticed that certain foods like Oranges tend to cause more phlegm to be produced?
Also, certain drinks like milk, soya bean milk and fresh orange juice tend to form a coating on the throat and if you're already having a cough, trigger more phlegm? Notice how sometimes you have to clear your throat a few times after drinking soya bean milk?
A bit ironic since these things are nutritious.

Speaking of "make active intestine", I have had several patients thank me before because post-operatively, a common symptom is abdominal bloatedness. It can be extremely uncomfortable but there's a very easy solution for it - take Yakult or pop Lactobacillus tablets, available from the pharmacy over-the-counter. They are somewhat the same thing because Yakult also has Lactobacillus Acidophillus. The tablets that have to be kept refrigerated is preferred over those who are just sitting on the shelf due to the potency. You can check the strengths of the different brands of tablets on their labels and do a proper comparison before buying.
Normally, post-op, the antibiotics that are given as a precautionary measure against infection do knock out the microflora that are present in our intestines and which assist in the digestion process to a certain extent. Drinking Yakult or consuming probiotics products help to establish that microflora balance back in the intestines.
