blame the legal system there cos lawyers only get paid when they win so any case also must takeOriginally posted by Kuali Baba:I think the poison dwarf of F1 (Bernie Ecclestone) put it in a rather witty manner, "Over there if it's five past noon and you say, 'Good morning' you get sued!"
Do we blame the lawyers who take up these cases as well, setting precedents?
Don't worry, they're going to hell.Originally posted by Meia Gisborn:The prevailing mindset in the US with regard to litigation appears to be, "Sue first, ask questions later."
I'd personally like to see all lawyers in this country airlifted to a remote Pacific atoll, and then a small nuclear device detonated therein.
Its the US. What's Surprising?Originally posted by the Bear:i read an article in USAToday and was aghast...
schools in the US are going to ban playing during recess... SERIOUS!
check it out => Schools bans recess games
so dodgeball was banned, and maybe rightly so.. but tag and football?
their excuse was "children are running into each other" and "broken arms and dislocated fingers"
which set me thinking... was it really that, or were the schools afraid of litigation-happy parents? then also, where does it end?
already, we have people winning lawsuits where they themselves got hurt because of their own stupidity... blaming others seem to be profitable...
soon, we will all have to follow a set of rules... personal judgement, subjectivity, common sense will all take a backseat and we become automatrons... unable or unwilling to take the personal responsibility to make a decision without someone hounding you about it, laying down a set of stupid rules.. and then browbeating you into submission no matter how stupid the rules are...
i feel, somewhere along the way, we have lost our common sense...
either that, or we have lost our moral courage to tell those idiots who insist on insane rules to bugger off..
what do you think?

No win no fee. But what about the costs of the other party? Somehow, I find that explanation unconvincing. I think the reason is the highly publicised astronomical punitive damages that have sometimes been awarded.Originally posted by gasband:According to one of my frens who is a lawyer he says US is a "sueing" country becos in their system, most of the time when u lose a court case, u dun have to pay the lawyers. So they have this "why not" mentality.

The burglar's suing the shop for 'emotional distress'.

I know that the US is a highly litigious society, but having burglars suing shopkeepers and banning recess time play is really scratching the bottom of the barrel.
And I thought the one where the woman who won a lawsuit against McDonalds' for scalding herself with McDonalds' coffee was bad enough (which is why McDonalds' coffee cups now have the label 'WARNING:HOT!' on them. ).
Oh, wait - to say that it's scratching the bottom of the barrel is an insult to barrels. They have truly smashed through the bottom of the barrel.
Please don't sue me, Mr Barrel.
You know why airline peanuts have the label 'Warning: remove shell before eating nuts'?Originally posted by Fatum:my personal favourite, take note when anyone flies those crappy North American domestic flights next time .....
they'll pass out little packets of peanuts cos that's all you get .....
and the packet has a warning that says: "Warning, contain nuts" .....
