Day of Atonement 26 The LORD said to Moses, 27 "The tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. Hold a sacred assembly and deny yourselves, [1] and present an offering made to the LORD by fire. 28 Do no work on that day, because it is the Day of Atonement, when atonement is made for you before the LORD your God.
Leviticus 23:26-28
The blood of the slaughtered lamb was sprinkled on the cover of the mercy seat of the ark of covenant. The blood shed was to atone for the sins of the people of Israel - a foreshadow of the coming Lamb of God who is going to take away the sins of the whole world.
Jesus Christ came to shed His blood for us, so that we may have redemption-the forgiveness of sins. He paid the atonement sacrifice for us all.
