here's the official story:
NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - General Nutrition Centers said Friday it will stop selling any products that contain the ingredient ephedra.
The company will halt the sale of those products at the end of June. Products containing ephedra have been suspected of contributing to deaths by users, including Baltimore Orioles pitcher Steve Bechler in February. Suffolk County, N.Y. has already banned products containing ephedra and other jurisdictions, including New York City, are considering such bans.
"We believe that ephedra-based products are safe when used as directed," said a statement from GNC, which with 5,300 stores is the largest specialty retailer in the nutritional supplement segment. "Nonetheless, the current business climate dictates that we move in a different direction."
The store said that it will take a one-time charge due to the cost of pulling products from its inventory. It said it should still be profitable for 2003. It said success of its new ephedra-free product, "showed us that the consumer trend towards e-free products is on the rise."
GNC is based in Pittsburgh and owned by Dutch retailer Royal Numico N.V.

what happened was supposedly GNC refused to pull its product until a whole load of lawsuits came pouring in...
other products were also being investigated.. i lost the Rolling Stone mag which detailed how some bodybuilders were using GNC products, saying it was almost as good as steriods... and the side effects the doctors found (not good)...
as you all know, athletes have been dropping dead and getting crippled.. most of them are from heavy use of these "health products"... and quite a few from steriod abuse... Carl Lewis was on some kinda drug... he was NEVER clean...Originally posted by sillyme:tell tell! -

i forgot but it could be the same stuff the bodybuilders use that they say is "natural speed" (speed being amphethamines)

apart from the ma huang, there are other considerations also...
loading on proteins taxes the hell out of your liver and kidneys... and may cause abnormally high amount of toxins in your blood...
cutting down on carbs just add to the toxicity as breaking down of fat and proteins for energy result in lots of nasty by-products (which is why the liver and kidneys suffer)

There are only so many names to go around so I don't think it can be helped if the kid shares a name with someone I know. I'd use it if I like it.
