Either you're using these extremem cases as an example or you've the unfortunate experience of hearing them.
I do am unfortunate to hear one of them. He below to a christian religious group tat need to meet up on one weekday, maybe tuesday or wednesday and they do some cell group thingy. Near to his exam, he ask to be excuse for a few weeks to prepare for it. Who find themselves having too much time to revise for exams ? And do u know wat they say ? They say tat they have to be with god in good times or bad times, and force him to come over on the following weeks regardless of whether he has exam or not. Aren't they crazy or wat !
God wants us to be good stewards of what He gives to us. Be it time, wealth, or talents, it must be used in appropriate manner. If there is an exam coming, go prepare for it. If there is a need to buy certain things, go buy it. Whoever misuse God's words to his benefit, I pray that God have mercy on him/her.
I am pretty sure they want people to give AT LEAST 10% of their money. Isn't tat making people unable to be good steward ? Tat is compulsory for some churches isn't it ? Otherwise they will pester u and give u pressure on it. WHen some people fail to attend church or cell group meetings, they too will start to pester and give u pressure to attend such meeting to "strenghten" the faith. Tat is again sort of becoming compulsory isn't it ?
