Somehow dunno why, handsome guys in Catholic church tend to consider joining the priesthood at certain point of their life. I have come across quite a few very handsome ones who nearly became priests.
I used to think Father Martin Loh was cool before he was ordained. He was then known as Bro Martin Loh. When he was ordained, I jokingly told my church friends "Oh no. So sad. We have one handsome guy less now." And my friends actually thought that I was dating him before he was ordained. But of course, I cleared things out with them later on.
Another time, I saw one guy quite cool one. Non chinese. Tall. Handsome. But later, I found out that he's a priest (I think is Fr John Bosco F Pereira) who just got trsf to Holy Family Church. I was like "aiyah!" -

the lay people.. the ordinary congregation, do not do enough...
to be part of the church more.. to do more for the community, for the parish, the congregation itself...

sometimes i do want to go help.. but shift hours mean that i don't have a fixed time for Sunday Mass
so helping out, i'd be more a liability than an asset...
anyway, it's great to hear that you were active.. and can be again, once you get to know the congregation!

About Catholic children and Catholic schools....
Ask you all (Catholics) har....
If my children are Catholics, does it make it easier to get into Catholic schools even though they are not within my area? Can I go shake hand with the church priests or nuns and ask them to help?
Just asking. No children lah. But my friend (who is a member of Hainanese association) couldn't enrol his child into Pei Qun School which is under that association. He said that now all schools go by the book. I'm not sure that also applies to Catholic schools or not. -

My nearest parish is St Mary of the Angels. But I won't go there. I feel very uncomfortable there. Somemore the priests there a bit a bit asked for donation. I don't blame them lah. They just renovated the place and the reno cost a few million. But I am a poor woman.
So I usually attend somewhere a bit further... like St Joseph at Bukit Timah or even Novena church. -
