How big a part does religion play in marriage?
Will u mind marrying somebody who is not frm the same religion as you?
Why? -
if both of u truely love each other, nothing can break both of u up.

But won't there be differences like a conflict of beliefs that may lead to disagreements?
Ive heard of friends saying they would rather marry a person from their religion. -
Let's save everyone time.
How easy do you think it is for a serious christian to balance a relationship with a non believing spouse and a faith that calls for a higher love then the marriage, and for him or her to do things that the spouse might not understand. There will be friction, and serious one at that.
It's not a matter of love overcomes all, but which love overcomes which.
Ultimately when you add cold and hot water together, you get a lukewarm mess that does nobody any good. -

it is possible... but are both of u willing to face the crowd assuming one is a christian...
as some ppl noe here... my ex is a christian... and i am nt... when we were together in the beginning... there were alot of protests coming from her friends... from her churches... but luckily nt from her parents... however we went through this together... due to our love for each other... however this relationship was ended nt due to religious problems... but personal reasons...
moral of the story... it is possible to have a relationship between 2 ppl with different religion... i believe tat love conquers all... the relationship is between both parties... as long as both of u are able to respect each other's religion... and able to make ur stand amist all the protests throwing towards ur relationship... i give u both my blessings...

At my workplace, there is this uncle, used to be a non-christian, married his christian wife 25+ yrs ago. This uncle was only converted 2 yrs ago. Anyway, I asked him whether life was 'difficult' together with his wife before he was a non-christian. He simply gave me this answer, " If you LOVE your other half and RESPECT each other's wishes, nothing is impossible. I'm thankful that my wife was and still is...a loving and PATIENT person ".

What about freethinkers?
Regardless of whichever religion you belong to, will u be willg to marry a freethinker? Assuming that the freethinker half IS willing to marry you, are YOU willing to marry him/her, and will you try to influence him/her into joining you in that religion? -

I'm catholic, my ah lao is so called freethinker but more on the buddhism side... he used to go church with me in the very beginning, then now if i ask, his chin can mop the floor....
sometimes we still do discuss religion but most of the time end up arguing, so we try to avoid very sensitive topics. He's ok with my faith as long as I dun hint about his conversion. anyway needs lots of patience and prayers... not easy but i still marry him... -

If I am not wrong from reading tis reply, u desire for him to convert to christainity. Why ? If he never ever convert, or refuse the children to convert to christainity, wat will u do ? Will u still marry him ? Why can't accept him the way he is, a free thinker ?
The influence of religion seems to be segregate people more and more....

Actually don't make him join in the easter or christmas mass is better... it may make u feel good, but he will feel very very uncomfortable in tat environment and doing some things which he don't believe... I think a mistaken concept about free thinker is tat they only believes in money... Doesn't believe in God doesn't equal makes him a materialistic or selfish person. He may just turn out to be a person tat goes by logics more and need more proving and questioning before accepting it as truth.
Just put it tis way. There r a lot of "god" tat u don't believe right ? there r a lot of hindu god, chinese god or God in muslim sense, catholic sense or christian sense etc. The difference between u and a free thinker is they just do not believe in one more god than u. If u can understand why u do not believe in all the other gods, then u should understand why he doesn't believe in yours. -
Excuse me? I hear all this coming from a guy who has no qualms about "respecting" his girlfriend's belief's by "converting" her?

Many young Christians practice "Courtship Evangelism" meaning to bring someone to Christ through being boyfriends and girlfriends and subsequently inviting them to church, share the gospel.
This itself is wrong because the Christian is placing him/herself unequally yoked with the non believer.
If you, as a Christian, ignore this and go on for marriage, you may be right in that no one can stop you, or, my spouse may someday be converted. However, you will still be accountable to God when you see Him some day.

Roman Catholics is not equal to Christianity. They are two different religions.
About many gods, maybe it can be a refreshing thought: Do you believe in evolution? (ie. Man from apes) Evolution by itself is a religion you know? Ever consider that? -
i think that God, not religion plays a big part in marriage. What are we without our beliefs? Having someone to change your beliefs is tantamount to losing yourself. Are you ready? Most would hanged on to our beliefs.
Then there is the kids. A family is supposed to be ONE, not you do your thing i do mine. The kids will grow up confused too.
So i will definitely marry someone who is a christian to avoid all these pains. -
Does the Catholic Conversion Rule apply to Protestants too? Or are the latter exempted since they worship Christ too?
I can't imagine people like fandango marrying a Catholic girl, since he like to brandish the issue about RCs not Christians so much.
Even when Christians marry, do they go to the same church? Or one of them must sacrifice and join the church of their spouse?
Similarly, even if fandango is not converted, I can't imagine him going to his church, and the wife goes to hers every Sunday. Then the kids go where? -
It is commonly accepted and common pratice that one party will go over to one of the other congregations...

I am not too sure about the meaning Catholic Conversion Rule. If it means that the non-beliveing spouse MUST be converted (akin the Muslim conversion), it does not apply to Protestant.
Firstly say a guy is a Christian, he should be aware of not having a non Christian girlfriend or spouse.
Let say under some circumstances, this same man married this non Christian girlfriend, there is no rule in the Bible sayin that she MUST convert. What he can do is to pray to God to soften her heart and that she may be called upon salvation. This again doesn't mean that it opens a flood gate for Christian to marry non-believer. The previous paragraph is still the criteria.
About going to the same church, the husband and wife must layout their conviction and pray about it. The rule of thumb is that the wife must submit to her husband decision. This means that the husband plays a huge huge huge role and will be answerable to God for whatever decision he makes for him and his wife, and eventually their children. -
I can't imagine a most traditional christian switching to the spouse's congregation at CHC.
I mean when everyone is speaking in tongues, he stand there stunned ah?
Then they keep on emphasizing tongues, miracles, HYS concert .... and the congregation shout AMEN ... he sit there stunned ah?
Then the sermon may sound quite different to the already entrenched doctrine in his heart. So sad. How to be happy like that? -

The husband and wife must really pray about it. Search the scriptures for the truth. -
How liddat? Their membership is getting larger, and there is high chance your christian girlfriend may be from there.
Ok la, I think fandango will use the 'Christ is the head of church, husband is head of family' argument to 'strongly persuade' his wife in our scenario to switch to his congregation. -
there is no such thing as Catholic Conversion Rule.... For Catholics, if you want to convert, either for your other half or for yourself, everyone have to go thru the Rights of Christain Initiation for Adults. It's a one year course, free. Available at all churches.
However, at the end of it, it's still your free will to choose whether you want to convert or not.
The only 'Conversion Rule' I know is if there is an emergency(life and death) and the dying wants to be converted, we Catholics have to authority to baptize them.
And for Catholics, we dun have the problem of whose church you should go to. Singapore is being divided up into Parish areas, each parish area has a church(parish), So you just go to the church in the Parish area where your house is located. Or if you are outside, you can go to the Church most convenient. All Catholic Churches in Singapore have the same readings everyday of the year. Only the Homily is different. -
If i remember correctly, it is the responsibility of Catholic parents to bring up the children in the Catholic faith. Should this be a problem, the godparents have to do something, for it is their responsibility to.
