Letter from His Grace regarding the Priestly Society of St Pius X 8 Jul 02
My Dear People of God,
As there is some confusion among our faithful with regard to the above Society of Saint Pius X, I would like to draw your attention to the canonical situation of the priests of the Priestly Fraternity of St Pius X (commonly known as "Lefrebrtists") as stated in the note of the Pontifical Commission "Ecclesia Dei".
1: Because of their illicit (but valid) diaconal and priestly ordination by reason of the lack of dimissorial letters and incardination in a diocese or a canonically erected religious institute (which the Society of Pius X is NOT), these priests are suspended "a divinis ", (C 1383). Therefore they CANNOT exercise the power of Orders (Canon 1333).
2: Further, the members of the Society of St Pius X are excommunicated "latae sententiae" if they adhere to the schism of Msgr. Lefebvre. Formal adherence to the schism, being an interior act, must be manifested exteriorly: priests who remain in the Society and continue to exercise their ministry undoubtedly give this exterior sign of their interior adherence and are consequently excommunicated as schismatics (Canon 1364). The fact that the Society has elected one of the excommunicated bishops (Cf. Motu Proprio "Ecclesia Dei" of 2nd July 198
, Bernard Fellay, as superior General aggravates the schismatic situation of the Society of St Pius X.
CONCLUSION: a Bishop cannot and must not give either jurisdiction or a pastoral ministry to a priest member of the Society of St Pius X until the situation described above changes. This can only be accomplished by means of a reconciliation with the Holy See.
I sincerely hope that the above gives you a clear picture of the position of the Society of St Pius X and the canonical situation of the priests serving in the Society. This is the official stand of the Church.
Let us pray that a reconciliation will take place.
God bless you.
Yours devotedly in Christ
Msgr. Nicholas Chia, D.D.
Archbishop of Singapore
