Read thru my books, found some trivia about Christianity that are interesting, and surprising. Hope to share...
St Peter's Is The Main Catholic Church In Rome, And The World
It is certainly the most famous and most publicised, but it is not the main one. That honour goes to the relatively unheard of St Giovanni in Laterano (St John Lateran) which is officially the Cathedral of Rome and Metropolitan Church of its Bishops. The building also bears the inscription ' Mother And Head Of All Churches In The City And The World'
Pride Goeth Before A Fall
A popular rendition of Proverbs 16:18 - 'Pride goeth before destruction and an haughty before a fall.'
The Animals Entered The Ark Two By Two
Leaving aside any debate on the authencity of the event itself, it must be pointed out that Genesis 7 : 2 - 3 states: 'Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female, and of the beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female. Of fowl also of the air by sevens, male and female, to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth.'
Btw, the ones in bold is the common myth, and the paragraphs are the actual facts
Must also attribute these posts to Edward Phillips of HarperCollins Publishers.
Here's another msiconception. This book I referred to for stuff is actually written by Graeme Donald of Unwin Paperbacks....not by Edward Phillips......ahh thats how usual misconceptions started.
Adam And Eve And The Garden Of Eden
Presuming that you accept the Bible's version of the so-called Creation, there are several misconceptions attached to these two characters which have been perpetuated down the ages by artists and clergy alike.
First, lets look at the 'apple'. Genesis 3 simply refers to 'the fruit' and never gets more specific. That it was an apple is less than likely since Mesopotamia, where the Garden of Eden is traditionally held to have been, is far too hot for apple cultivation. The apricot is a good contender but the most likely culprit as the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge is the fig, since it is only after having a nibble that Adam and Eve start rowing and sporting fig leaves to bury their differences. It was Aquila of Pontus who first started talking about apples when he translated the Song of Solomon from Hebrew into Greek. His choice of fruit was dictated by the fact that in his culture the apple symbolised desire and even lust. No one, and that includes St Jerome who translated the Old Testament into Latin, ever checked up, and the myth lived happily ever after.
Finally, there is the belief that God gave Adam and Eve their marching orders out of anger at their having disobeyed his intructions to leave the Tree of Knowledge strictly alone. Actually he drove them out 'lest he put forth his hand, and take also the Tree of Life, and eat, and live forever.' So it was divine concern at the prospect of man achieveing immortality that prompted the eviction.
late last nite there was this show on searching for the legend of king arthur.. so they were trying to search for archeological proofs dating back to the 5th century.. the truth is it may not be a fantasy afterall.. there are proof that he existed.. or someone with that sort of a legend..
IHS
It is wholly incorrect to print the above as I.H.S, that being the customary form which gives credence to teh myth that the letter represent Iesus Hominum Salvator, (Jesus, Saviour of Men) or In Hac Salus, (Safety in this [the cross]) or In Hoc Signo (In this sign[you will conquer]). IHS is nothing more than abbreviated form of Greek equivalent of the names Jesus, which is lesous, IHS being but the first two and last letters. It is obvious that there is a double misconceptions here; the 'H" is not an "H" at all but the long Greek "E" which just happen to be represented by the symbol "H". This was mistaken by those people familiar with the Latin culture, but ignorant of the Greeks, as being the letter 'H" as in "Harry". Because of this, IES might be better, but either way, I.H.S. makes no more sense than does putting J.I.M. instead of 'James'.
wats the diff betw this thread and the other one wif a similar title?
Urm, if u notice i post this in eternal hope, and this thread is on the myths in Christianity
the other one is general myths, on sciences, geography, history etc etc
Westminster Abbey Is An Abbey
Not since the days of Henry VIII and the Dissolution of the Monasteries has this building been an abbey, if only for the simple reason that there has not been an abbot in the residence since then. The official title since 1560 is The Collegiate Church of Saint Peter at Westminster. Elizabeth I replaced the abbot with a dean.
God Tempers The Wind To The Shorn Lamb
Yet another quote with a distinctly biblical ring to it, but which is really of far more recent and secular origins. The line was popularised by Laurence Sterned's A Sentimental Journey, but the original use seems to lie with Henri Estienne, the French scholar and publisher.
St Sebastian Was Shot To Death By Arrows
Although this was the way that virtually all artists depict the man;s death, he was actually beaten to death. The Roman Emperor Diocletian ordered Sebastian's execution for his adoption of the Christian faith. After being left for dead by the archers Sebastian, former Captain of the Emperor;s Praetorian Guard, was nursed back to health by Christians.
Once back on his feet, Sebastian took the rather short sighted course of paying a visit to his former employer to beg tolerance for all Christians. Not a man to make the same mistake twice, Diocletian had him beaten to death with clubs on the spot.
Rather, ironically, he is the patron saint of archers and pin-makers!
Beelzebub Is Another Name For The Devil
Nothing to do with Old Nick at all, 'Baalzebub', as the deity's name is properly spelt, was actually god of the ancient Israelites. They in turn had pinched the character from Baal Ekron who was the Philistines' Lord of the Flies.
