The beginning of a new Church year.
Advent prepares us to celebrate Christ's first coming(Christmas) and warns us that He will come again to judge the living and the dead.(second coming)

never. church calendars r never fix because of the movement of Good Friday which follows the Jewish calendar of Passover. Christmas is fix on 25 Dec but note that biblically the date of Birth of Christ is not mentioned. Advent is the beginning of new Church yr, followed by Epiphany, other ordinary sundays, Ash wednesday,then Lent, Holy week, Good Friday and then Easter Sunday. the Ascension Day, Pentecost and after that Trinity Sunday and what's left is ordinary sundays until Advent again.Originally posted by wuming78:when is the beginning of a church yr? is it a fixed day? -

today is the first sunday of Advent. see the first post..there r four candle. each sunday in Advent(4 weeks) a purple candle is lit and the pink is left for sunday next before Christmas. Other Protestant denominations seldom observe such. -
