i would tell the students tat some ppl believe earth is 6000 yrs old, some believe it to be billions of yrs old...it depends which stand u take...no deifinite rite or wrong answer but my personal belief is tat its 6000 yrs old...

Yes wikipedia is not the best source, but this article for big bang does say a bit about the studies, research. The info is quite hard to understand. But there are sources to which the info came from.
We know that there has been a lot of studies and research done on the big bang theory. Big bang scientific theory is widely accepted by the scientific community.
The Large Hadron Collider has been built to "reproduce" the big bang and also to study physics etc.

Whereas in religion, there are many ideas of how the universe originated.
Christian - The bible God did it and created 2 humans adam and eve. There was a special fruit and a serpent that talked.
Muslim - THe Muslim God Allah did it and created 2 humans adam and eve. There was a special fruit and a serpent that talked.
Buddhist - Always has been there. A cycle
Hindu - Lord Brahma did it. Brahma is self-born in the lotus flower. Another legend says that Brahma was born in water. A seed that later became the golden egg. From this golden egg, Brahma the creator was born, as Hiranyagarbha. The remaining materials of this golden egg expanded into the Brahm-anda or Universe. Being born in water, Brahma is also called Kanja (born in water).
When comparing the scientific theories and the religious beliefs, seriously, I would rather trust the dudes in the lab coats who spend their lives studying the universea and outer space...
But out of the religious beliefs of th eorigin of the universe, I think the buddhist version makes some sense.
In short, there has been a lot of studies done by the scientific community. But if you look over at the religious side, you see only........ creation stories/accounts.

You know the dead sea scrolls right? Radiometirc dating is used to date the dead sea scrolls, and the result is that the dead sea scrools are one of the oldest biblical scriptures found!
Radiometric dating is also used to date the age of the earth. Result is 4.5 billion years old.
So why you accept radiometric dating for dead sea scrolls and not the age of the earth?
If you have close to zero knowledge about the age of the earth, the process of dating dead sea scrolls and the age of the earth, why do you tell me that the age of the earth is 6000 years old???

Radiometric dating is used to date CHRISTIAN RELICS, dead sea scrolls and also the age of the earth.
IF YOU accept the age of the dead sea scrolls (2150 years old) using radiometric dating, then you must accept the age of the earth to be 4.5 billion years old using the same method.
You know what I mean?

I have this theory....the earth is 4.5B years old, but humans first inhabit here 6000 years ago...I may be wrong...then it'll come down to the question of who put humans on earth ? Where does the humans come from .... I dunno leh...Hahaha!
But from my speculation, humans maybe something else (other lifeforms) before they become reincarnated as humans....so that is one way of looking at it... -

About origin of life, read up abiogenesis, NOT evolution as these 2 are completely different field of studies. :)

You got the definition of atheism wrong.
We are atheists SIMPLY and ONLY because of the lack of belief in gods. Some atheists extend this lack of belief to spirits, angels, ghosts and anything supernatural.
The main thing we lack belief in is anything that is "supernatural".
As an atheist, I am just another regular human being. I believe in love, peace and my loved ones. And the things I love to do.
To be an atheist is to be human. And my religion is to do good.

But take note that some atheists do not believe in gods but they do for ghosts/spirits.

my stand and belief is this. all the god religion are becoming obsolete and outdated in this day and age. pls bear in mind that these beliefs were inherited and passed down for a few millennium years. during that era, science & technology were not as advanced now. during that era, religion reigned supreme, as only faiths were required.
why humans created religion? because of fear? because of fear of the unknown? because of fear of being punished by a supernatural or divine being? fear and in awe of unknown and nature. hence rituals such as praying and offerings, sacrifises of animals and babies, even humans took place. fear that if you do not offer sacrifises, the whole tribe or cavemen will be punished. so you see, fear is the primary motivation for creating a religion.

Yea could be that. The mind is powerful for imagining things.
Our sense often fail us too because our eyes/ears/noses are not perfect.

If you believe in ghosts, how do you explain that chinese only see chinese ghosts, thais only see thai ghosts and white people only see white ghosts?
To you, are there different "worlds" of ghostlands or what?
