Catholics, Protestants and Eastern Orthodox are all Christians. The "Christians" that we normally talk about especially in local context are actually the Protestants whose "ancestors" (I'm talking only about the main stream ones) broke away from the Catholics because they "protested" against the Catholic Church and her Pope.
The Protestants never like to be called protestants. They are never seem to be proud of this name. I guess that's why they only want to be called Christians.
Frankly, I dunno why forming "mega-churches" is never discouraged by the mainstreamers. There is no reason to create a new church organisation unless one wants to have his own followers (wants to be a Jesus).
Thanks for your link. That means that anyone who worship Jesus should be called Christians.
But these mega churches do not preach Jesus's teaching as the main stream churches understood it to be...so they still consider christians?
I bet the 2-3 anti-Christians here would gladly says YES as all their bashing are based on the "wrong teachings" of such mega churches.....and they are not so mega when compared to the whole Chiristians community afterall.

Then megachurches should recognise pope as vicar of christ and respect his papal authority.
To justify 'anti christians' are not so mega when comparing whole xtian community

Tithes is giving 10% of the salary as stated in the bible. Offering is collected for donation to charity or whatever.
Churches preaching the prosperity theory/gospel ask for more money than these. Greed is in control.
As far as I know, Catholic Churches do not collect tithes and so do the other main streams Protestant Churches.....teaching of tithes has been twisted by mega churches and you can google and find many explanations on why such teachings is wrong and not supported by the Bible.
So, beside those mega churches goers, Christians do not need to tithe 10%....
Offering is on your freewill and you can give any amount you want or none. No problem.
And I agree with you that prosperity gospel is about greed. Christianity is about faith, hope and love and nothing is greater than love.

the word Christian comes from the word Christ (as in Jesus Christ). so you're right. anyone who follows Jesus is a Christian.

Protestants are called Protestants cuz their real founders protested against the Pope. So, never in our lifetime we will see Protestant recognising Pope as vicar of Christ.

if you are refering to the buying/selling of indulgences during that time (around 1517), here is another source:
"To indemnify hiim, and to make it possible to discharge these obligations Rome permitted him to have preached in his territory the plenary indulgence promised all those who contributed to the new St. Peter's; he was allowed to keep one half the returns, a transaction which brought dishonour on all concerned in it. Added to this, abuses occurred during the preaching of the Indulgence. The money contributions, a mere accessory, were frequently the chief object, and the "Indulgences for the Dead" became a vehicle of inadmissible teachings. "

as mentioned earlier, this act allowed by Pope Leo X was subsequently outlawed by Pope Pius V in 1567

objectively speaking, during the days of the reformation, all these breakaway churches, which later became the Anglicans, Methodist..etc are also considered not preaching Jesus's teaching as the main stream churches (ie. the Catholic Church) understood it.
pushing back further, this same accusation was also spoken about the Apostles, Christianity was describe as a Nazarene sect (Acts 26:5-8), divant from the main stream teaching of those days.
so different from "main stream" still christians???
I must be insane... talking about this at this hour of the morning... should be in bed... good night...
