I just started studying Chinese history and it is interesting to note the impact of Buddhism and other religions on Chinese culture. Without religion, there would be no history/no artefacts.
Conflicts between Buddhist Tang Dynasty and Islam Abassid Kingdom resulted in the Chinese defeat. Becoz of the defeat, Chinese expansion stopped and technology like gunpowder was spreaded to the middle east. Chinese defeat also resulted in central asia became Islam dominant (previously buddhist due to Tang dynasty rule)
The Abassids refined the gunpowder technology and used it to defeat Christian Byzantine Empire/Western Christianized nations. As a result, Byzantine lost and become islamic territory=present day turkey.

The point self reflection, in my humble opinion should be directed to the person who deviated the topic. Influence continue to occur despite whether there is self reflection or not by both sides. So whose side will you be on? -
