The peeps in Bar stated that they have (or had?) the highest abortion rate.
What a shame if you consider how Catholics are against abortion (when it is not life threatening).
They also better don't claim heritage with Christianity. Or they bring the name of the Lord into infamy.
Correction - ACS is an English educated school. It is in the culture - those into western values are the chiong type - drugs, booze, promiscuity. Flashy too, that's why you see those exotics near MOS.Originally posted by laurence82:As far as I know, ACS is a Methodist school but the chapel services look more like non denominational charismatic service.
Spooky at times
Then no point having chapel services or devotion .. 'cos none of the values get into their heads.Originally posted by laurence82:Ah, CJC doesnt mean even the majority of its students are Catholics in the first place.
Nowadays and even from last time, its very mixed
By right its a Methodist school larOriginally posted by Icemoon:Correction - ACS is an English educated school. It is in the culture - those into western values are the chiong type - drugs, booze, promiscuity. Flashy too, that's why you see those exotics near MOS.
Compare with AHS which is (by right) a Chinese educated school. So I guess they are more traditional in their chapel services.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
Its supposed to be 'missionary' in nature right?Originally posted by Icemoon:Then no point having chapel services or devotion .. 'cos none of the values get into their heads.
Exactly.Originally posted by laurence82:Ah, CJC doesnt mean even the majority of its students are Catholics in the first place.

The pioneer batches could be chinese (poor chinese), but I don't see anything chinese in ACS now.Originally posted by laurence82:By right its a Methodist school lar
To be specific, American Chinese Methodist missionary school
And no, despite the fact ACS students can be very Americanised, this feature does not stem from the fact that its founder was an American. I would say, its more like the whole of Singapore is bombarded with stuff from US, but ACS people can be very receptive to that kind of culture.
And western values are drugs and booze? Huh?
ya right .. the students only know what is the missionary position.Originally posted by laurence82:Its supposed to be 'missionary' in nature right?
I actually dont know what garble you are trying to say or what point you are bringing outOriginally posted by Icemoon:The pioneer batches could be chinese (poor chinese), but I don't see anything chinese in ACS now.
The students despise cheena culture too. Or else why their chinese result always so sucky?
The stereotype is set - you associate ACS with ang moh culture while Chinese High (now HCI) is cheena culture. But despite having a rich cheena tradition, their english results also good.
If you say ACS people can be very receptive to that kind of culture, I agree. They just despise cheena culture, so they identify more with western culture. Not to say HCI and AHS people not aligned with western values (most youths are), but at least they still retain some of their chinese roots.
Western values are drugs and booze. It was the ang mohs who introduced drugs on a mass scale to China, from India.
Furthermore .. all your concoctions from Absolut Vodka to Tequila, those "bar" drinks, have their origins from the western world.
I suspect even "China Black" is ang moh place, despite the cheena sounding name.
you are obviously anti-acs.Originally posted by Icemoon:The pioneer batches could be chinese (poor chinese), but I don't see anything chinese in ACS now.

Western values.Originally posted by laurence82:I actually dont know what garble you are trying to say or what point you are bringing out
So what if they align with whatever culture?
And which research actually says western values are drugs and booze? Do you mean to say, social ills or you meant to say values?
If you talk to NUS sociology professors, they prolly will tell you that the Singapore Chinese community has a problem with gambling, Malays with drugs and Indians with alcoholism. So, are these western values, or Malay values, or Indian values?
In the end, what the heck you're trying to say?
I have to remind everyone of their tradition.Originally posted by OO_OO_OO:you are obviously anti-acs.
and to those who feel we are arrogant, no. we just love our school to bits cos of all it has done for us.
and yeah, many of us are anti chinese cos we suck at it. its no different from hating math cos u suck at it.
In days of yore from Western Shores
Oldham dauntless hero came
And planted a beacon of Truth and Light
In this Island of the Main
Here may it stand from year to year
Emblem of grand endeavour
The regions round echo the sound
Of ACS forever!
(chorus)
Sing ACS forever more,
Our ACS forever.
God save our land and heaven bless
Our ACS forever.
Our students hail from China's Plains
And the Land of Rising Sun
We have many sons from India's Strand
And the Islands of the Main
Our heart our hopes our aims are one
No discord e'er will sever.
We'll stand together for the cause
Of ACS forever!
(Repeat chorus)
William Fitzjones Oldham (1854-1937) arrived in Singapore in 1885 to establish the first Methodist Episcopal Church in Malaya and Singapore. On 1st march 1886 the first school was started with 13 pupils at 70 Amoy Street in a shophouse when Oldham had raised $6,300 from his Chinese friends and $6,000 from the Colonial Secretary McCabe. English was taught in the morning and Chinese in the afternoon in this school, "the Chinese merchants undertaking to pay all current expenses, the missionary not charging for his time and labour".1. Chinese contributed more money.
I dunno why you all suck at it when Chinese High people can ace both languages.Originally posted by OO_OO_OO:you are obviously anti-acs.

Got proof Chinese High is good at English?Originally posted by Icemoon:I dunno why you all suck at it when Chinese High people can ace both languages.
I mean for a school which started as one a tinge of chinese tradition, the chinese standard today is mediocre at best.
Furthermore, to suck at it is no excuse. Rich families can always afford the best tutors.
but why Japan?Originally posted by OO_OO_OO:yeah.. that stanza just shows students come from everywhere haha

The only Hofstede I know is the one I learnt in the communication course. He defined culture right?Originally posted by laurence82:Social ills, not values
Alcoholism is a social ill. Since when its a value? I was thinking more of Geert Hofstede.
Again, Singapore Chinese have a problem with gambling, Indians with alcoholism, Malays with drugs
So these can be considered Asian values?
