Correction - ACS is an English educated school. It is in the culture - those into western values are the chiong type - drugs, booze, promiscuity. And no, despite the fact ACS students can be very Americanised, this feature does not stem from the fact that its founder was an American. I would say, its more like the whole of Singapore is bombarded with stuff from US, but ACS people can be very receptive to that kind of culture.

The stereotype is set - you associate ACS with ang moh culture while Chinese High (now HCI) is cheena culture. But despite having a rich cheena tradition, their english results also good.
If you say ACS people can be very receptive to that kind of culture, I agree. They just despise cheena culture, so they identify more with western culture. Not to say HCI and AHS people not aligned with western values (most youths are), but at least they still retain some of their chinese roots.

The most famous chinese booze is probably the chinese rice wine.
Actually in those chinese novels, they drink alcohol also, like Linghu Chong and the infamous Zhang Fei. But dunno why you don't find this prevalent today leh.

William Fitzjones Oldham (1854-1937) arrived in Singapore in 1885 to establish the first Methodist Episcopal Church in Malaya and Singapore. On 1st march 1886 the first school was started with 13 pupils at 70 Amoy Street in a shophouse when Oldham had raised $6,300 from his Chinese friends and $6,000 from the Colonial Secretary McCabe. English was taught in the morning and Chinese in the afternoon in this school, "the Chinese merchants undertaking to pay all current expenses, the missionary not charging for his time and labour".

its just the english background i guess. the only time we speak chinese is during chinese lessons. and even then, we still fused in abit of english here n there -

Yea .. social ills I guess. I use 'values' very loosely.
The funny thing is, the sg chinese has problem with gambling, but gambling never feature prominently in the western vices - they are more of booze and sex. I suppose they can control themselves better, even though their Las Vegas is more attractive than Macau, the gambling mecca of the east.
