Not really leh.Originally posted by laurence82:Its very hard to define ACS Barker as a Christin school
In fact, I dont know of any Christian school in that traditional sense
Most just have secular education with that wee bit of Christian education in chapel services
I am also quite cynical towards pastors and teachers preaching anyway
some non-believers get sick of the weekly chapel services and daily devotions ,...that they generate in themselves a rejection against them(pai2 chi4)Originally posted by :David's obviously been eating/drinking vinegar to have such negative feelings about Christian schools............
Students from Christian schools are just like those from any other neighbourhood schools except that Christian schools have a much longer tradition that plays an important part in imbuing students pride. Of course, pride is like a double-edged sword. When employed properly, it instills diligence in students, resulting in comparatively better academic results. But if employed incorrectly, it results in students becoming haughty and proud........
You just cannot and should not generalize Christian schools like that David. Tsk! Tsk!
no you cant, only muslims or indians are allowed to skip chapelOriginally posted by NewAge:I heard that u can skip the chapel service if u dun like it.
When ACS was first started, the intention was to provide education for the poor chinese. Is that why it is called Anglo Chinese? Unlike RI which was intended for the elites.Originally posted by davidche:some non-believers get sick of the weekly chapel services and daily devotions ,...that they generate in themselves a rejection against them(pai2 chi4)
As for me, im fine cos im a christian, i simply doubt whether these religious activities will have positive results.
The principal of Acsbr is really a good person. God bless him.
Can you pretend to hold a bible but put your lesson notes inside?Originally posted by davidche:no you cant, only muslims or indians are allowed to skip chapel
For devotions, which is sharing of daily bible verses and how it can be used on life, everyone has to listen unless you can literally close your ears.
I guess I am your old fogey from Barker, depending on how you see it.Originally posted by davidche:some non-believers get sick of the weekly chapel services and daily devotions ,...that they generate in themselves a rejection against them(pai2 chi4)

I don't know about ACJC, but friends from there have said there is very little of the missionary heritage left today..Originally posted by laurence82:Missionary schools are a joke nowadays. What missionary schools? Thats why I said it is a misnomer and even MOE already stated they are schools which should place priority on secular education
Even ACJC which I attended would rather spend more time on getting donations for sports complex and renovations, compared to a mere one hour of chapel service each week
They better don't claim heritage .. or we think Christianity encourages short skirts.Originally posted by LazerLordz:I don't know about ACJC, but friends from there have said there is very little of the missionary heritage left today..
And please do bring in the Presbysterian and Adventist ones too.Originally posted by Icemoon:a pertinent question to ask is how does Protestant missionary schools compare with Catholic convent schools.
I was thinking back of the old days where Bible studies and such form a large part of the students' syllabus, and where the teachers are either well versed in the Bible or the likes of SJi where the teachers are Brothers as well. Where also the Christian values are preached and practised also.Originally posted by LazerLordz:I don't know about ACJC, but friends from there have said there is very little of the missionary heritage left today..
ACJC meh? Its the CHIJ group of schools larOriginally posted by Icemoon:They better don't claim heritage .. or we think Christianity encourages short skirts.
ACJC. Everytime I go home from NUS to BV .. I see the girls with short skirts!Originally posted by laurence82:ACJC meh? Its the CHIJ group of schools lar
You never read the other topic?
I think it's more of inculcating Christian values than actual Bible knowledge that is the main priority today.. You can't have it pure when you come under MOE's purview..Originally posted by laurence82:I was thinking back of the old days where Bible studies and such form a large part of the students' syllabus, and where the teachers are either well versed in the Bible or the likes of SJi where the teachers are Brothers as well. My idea of ACS and the teachers now is akin to what Roald Dahl thought of his headmaster, Geoffrey Fisher, who went on to become the Archbishop of Canterbury. He was wondering, in one of his biographies, how come a chap who continually punished students physically and without remorse would later on preach about God's love and kindness.
Lose the missionary heritage is one thing. i had already become cynical of the chapel services and the so called values they preach.
I dont get the idea other schools like SAJC or CJC are strong in their missionary practices from my friends anyway. Most likely the strongest statements lie just in Christian Fellowships, which a lot of my friends didnt even join.
SJI can thoughOriginally posted by LazerLordz:I think it's more of inculcating Christian values than actual Bible knowledge that is the main priority today.. You can't have it pure when you come under MOE's purview..

SJI is one of the rare ones..Originally posted by laurence82:SJI can though
Remember some of their teachers are Brothers?
Dont know about other schools though
As far as I know, ACS is a Methodist school but the chapel services look more like non denominational charismatic service.
Spooky at times
