Quite true. I went to the boarding berth of svc 98 at Jurong East interchange and through a quick scan of the drivers' holding area which is next to its boarding berth, practically there's none that looked 30 years and younger. Majority seems to be in their golden years, but.... still fit to drive. Kowtows to them...Really.

Amazing... Having collected all can land you a driver's job pretty easily. Especially for those who can't find a job that they want during the economic crisis.
let me sidetrack a little. on as SBS bus, i noe how to chg gear from R to D (chicken feet), but how to chg gear from 1 to 2, 2 to 3, etc? is it must lift up gas pedal slightly or what?

All SBST buses have automatic gearboxes (Voith, W3E, ZF) to make life easier for the bus captains. So why do you wish to do it manually?

Just press 3 straightaway (if no D). 1 and 2 are used for kick down or when climbing gradiants.
Its like your car with D, 2 and L.
Manual transmission's rather troublesome. Auto transmission's more convenient for those who are lazy to change gears or those whose reflexes are slow.
Manual transmission's jerking not so comfortable. Imagine Gear 1 *jerk* Gear 2 *jerk*.
If the BC inexperienced/ accidentally change gear w/o pressing clutch, the engine will cease then need to restart engine and inconvenience people.
Or release the clutch too fast...
Got some people who wreck their car by changing gear without stepping full clutch.
Dangerous move...

True... Hence... auto transmission eliminates all this hassle. But.. regular maintenance is important, otherwise auto transmission might fail too.
I wonder if being a Bus Driver, it is ok to do the following things:
- Hearing music with a headset
- Dyed hair
- Singing In the Bus
- Allow to SMS while stopping at the traffic light
- Be late for 5-10 minutes for duty

It's ok. If you own the bus company that is...

Ni hao everyone,
Greetings from Europe!
Hi, as you know, SBST and SMRT are having shortage of drivers at the moment.
Is that so? I'd be more than happy to move to Singapore permanently and work as a BC, see also:
My earlier thread: Bus Captains from Europe in Singapore?
I'm still hesitating though, because I'd prefer a part-time job! They are hard to come by, are they not?
Anyway, would you Singaporeans mind being chauffeured by a European with 10+ years experience in bus driving (incl. double decker and articulated)?
If not, here I come ......
Seriously though, I could start immediately!

If they do it at their own discretion, that's fine with me..... Do but don't get caught.

I see drivers reading newspapers while waiting at the traffic light junctions. I also hear before some drivers chiming and humming all theirs way...Rather irritating......but hey... I can tell they're enjoying their ride.

Ok... u seem pretty excited about being a bus driver. If you got the right attitude and the correct mindset in serving your job, I see no reason why the company wouldn't want you.
What's the age of the youngest and/or oldest bus-driver you guys have ever come across?

I mean... there has been quite a number of old drivers around and some who even have problems walking and I also feel sympathetic for them because they need the job for a living. But there's nothing that we can do. The only thing we can help is to understand them if they drive too slowly or take longer time than expected to leave a bus-stop or reach our destinations.

Hmm... I'm really curious about something....
May I know how's the training schedule for new bus captains like?
How long is it and how do they "graduate" to become full-time BC?
