Its all about the wayang and publicity... sigh... We know what both companies are doing, big and small... very evident from the products they have.
well, for a start, they can say making buses more crowded can help reduce emissions if we look at CO2 emissions/passenger.

But if you pile more into buses, you make the engine work harder producing more emissions so it balances out.

This should give you a VERY obvious hint as to what kind of bus model they are bringing in :) Notice the tip-out desto box, smiley front that's not as curved as the volgrens, and the hugely obvious Merz badge.
Official website GoGreenwithSMRT.com is still under construction but the pamplets and posters are up at all major MRT stations.
Seriously, when i first saw this leaflet while on TIB722H today, i first thot SMRT buying Citaros (MKII). The newly face-lifted Citaros' front looks exactly the same as the bus in the picture.
Heres a link to how the face-lifted Citaro look like. Compare the similarity!
Citaro MKII
SMRT just launched a "SMRT is Green" event today.
Southeast Asia's first Euro V bus? Hmm..not bad eh. Thank you for the pics.

They are finally back being "first". *grins*
Just wondering whether SMRT will continue its TIB rego series for these new buses (TIB1258A onwards).
Hopefully SMRT will put this bus on service 854, as well as SBST putting its new Scania K230UB on service 70
Any speculation on its rego? Depot? First service to have these buses?

It will make more sense for SMRT to put it first into a service that may have more chances for PIW's to board i.e. along routes with places that PIW's may converge at e.g. hospitals or other organisations serving PIW's. Is 854 such a route?

I hope they will continue with TIB rego. I think it makes their work easier also.
With only 132 buses, I think we would not see alot of services with the Mercs. I will think the top picks will go to popular services like 190, 963, etc..

Umm yeah, makes sense somewhat... since the directive for the whole SMRT business is profit and nothing about usability (just look at the horrible NSL train frequencies in the morning at 9:30am lah).
Anyway.... what buses would these 132 or 133 buses be replacing?
I dun think SMRT has 132 or 133 UD's in total right now. TIB425R and TIB426M and their batch is due up in 2009 but I think they will be extended till 2011 at least....
It was announced that there will be (only) 66 buses, such buses, to be brought in...
Euro V, nice one...
Shall see if this guys gets the normal TIB1258A following rego, or some other special ones like TIB1688? or TIB8888?

It has been announced several times on the papers that SMRT will be bringing in 132 instead of the previously mentioned 66 buses.

SMRT mentioned on the ZB interview that they have 49 UDs due for replacement. I believe the remaining buses should be for fleet expansion. It's about time too to meet the PTC requirements.

Thats sweet.. it means that there will be about 82 or 83 more buses on the road to rack up frequencies ultimately.

It doesnt even have a rego now... much less a month back. How can it go on split shift or any shift for that matter??

that was where my doubts lie. probably they had some special arrangement with LTA for that to test out the ez-link etc? the info i got was that a SMRT bus with Gemilang bodywork was on 854 but the person could not provide the rego. probably it is a false positive.
Hmmm... anyway, for that record, that Gemilang front does resemble very much that of a Volgren's.

SMRT has pledged to go green on Wednesday, with the news that they will launch the first Euro V bus in South-east Asia into service by the middle of next month.
Another 66 Euro V buses will replace part of SMRT's fleet between August and December this year.
Currently, authorities here have only set the guideline for 40 per cent of buses here to be Euro IV compliant by 2010.
Euro V buses emit even less greenhouse gases than their Euro IV counterparts.
SMRT also said that they were introducing 200 taxis which will run on compressed natural gas and 100 taxis which meet the Euro IV emission standards.

Given 40% of SMRT's 860 buses, SMRT needs to have at least 340 buses which are Euro IV and above. Given the 132 buses projected for next 5 years, it is impossible to meet the standards. Or have I misinterpreted the 40% when it should be "40% of SBST and SMRT buses" which means the total number of Euro IV buses the 2 companies should have adds up to 40%?
