Why does the government want to woo back overseas Singaporeans who are successfully based there?? Even though I appreciate the Singapore government on finally realising that Singaporeans do have potential too but is it fair to attract those capable ones with grants?? Is it fair to those overseas Singaporeans' employers/ universities etc who depends on this SG talents overseas??
edit: fine last edit i said that the govt labelled these overseas Singaporeans quitters. Well I was wrong.
heres the link to full original ST article published online: http://www.overseassingaporean.sg/community/d/opinion-will-a-red-carpet-draw-sporean-scientists-backKnow the difference!!!
Singaporeans who are based overseas are either sent by their companies or went to develop their own career or business, they retain their Singapore citizenship, they come fulfil their NS responsibilities, they call Singapore home.
Many left Singapore and took up foreign citizenships for various reasons, it is their choice no doubt, but many say many bad things about Singapore, they have no hope in Singapore, and they quit being Singaporean, so Goh CK called them quitters! and many of them still left their CPF in Singapore, just in case.
Singapore brings in talents from abroad, to do jobs where there are not enough Singaporeans to fill the positions or no Singaporeans want to do.
Ya I re-read my facts and know the differences. A recent ST article stated how R&D researcher left Singapore for overseas where the research environment is more friendly. Now after depending on foreign talent the government decided to woo them back with some perks. It is good the Singapore government wants to rely more on its own people but then this depends on the overseas Singapore talent. And also Singaporeans who migrated overseas do not deserved to be labelled quitters. Someone close to me migrated a few years back to Australlia with whats left of his savings and cos he thinks au will provide a better life for his family and oso he cant find a job even with a degree. Does people like him deserve to be called quitters?
do you really care if you are labelled quitter or talent? GCT used the term quitter and he was labelled moron, it didn't bother him, he stands just as tall!! Go where you can find a life for yourself, we are happy for you so long if you don't go round cursing Singapore for not giving you a chance.
Singapore is a small place and we can only focus on somethings that benefits us. Last time my uncle's friend took up studies on water purification technology and he was laughed at, Singapore have to buy water from malaysia, where got water for you to purify, now water purification is a billion $ business for Singapore. I know of another guy graduated with PhD in Nuclear Physics, and he lamented there is no opportunity in Singapore.
Singapore uses talents who can contribute to our future, Singaporeans decide what they want to study, in the end, there must be a match for these talents to stay in Singapore. If you can cook authentic nasi lemak there is a place here for you, before the PRC or the pinoy takes over the stalls, if not you need to go to oz for the people there can't tell the diff.
For those in overseas, who would want to come back if they know that an local P.hd graduate ended up being an taxi driver?

hehe...no diff, either you drive taxi overseas or in Singapore. But I think Singaporean taxi drivers have easier life, always cannot find them.
Sgf really almost full time public transport forum for taxi and buses.
every topic will end up as bus or taxis.
How come?
dunno, too many cabbies uncles and bus kiddie fans here.
Driving cab is damn stressful.

He who laughs first and laughs last, laughs.
Laughter is the best medicine but I dun need medicine.
Woo back talent? hahahahaha ........ Want to woo back Tanya Chua??? Better don't get her back she is doing very well overseas. Moreover, Singapore cannot provide her the environment for her career.
Cannot apply new HDB because we bought freehold for half the price and twice the size in host country. if want hdb flat only allowed resale at ridiculous market price.
Private property over priced.
Hotel very expensive and not family friendly.
Come home squeeze with family in their 99 year leasehold flat. Don't dare to stay too long.
Rental don't have short term one.
Singapore job market limited, you either work for garmen and endure garmen/beuracratic style office politics...or owned by foreigner and/or staffed with foreigner top management.
I really don't understand why they even bother to woo overseas talents back..there no place for them in SG.
If our local SG talent cannot find decent jobs in Sg, whats the point of wooing the oversea ones home ??
Want to woo scientists. ..lagi difficult lah.. they are academics..not millionaire businessmen who can afford private properties and expensive international school for their children.
Got good jobs in sg?
Gahmen want these talent to give up everything overseas to come home. ..if the SG job don't work out how ? Where they go next ? After they leave host country and give ip their work status there.. it is very difficult to get back in.
Give carrots? Give them gold bars better.
