Hi, as you know, SBST and SMRT are having shortage of drivers at the moment. Many people have been complaining of irregular bus frequencies, long waiting times and sometimes crowded buses.
Hence, it does come to my mind that one day, some locals might consider being bus drivers. So, are there any bus drivers around who are keen to share their experiences?
I have a few qns, currently, pertaining to the roles of bus captains.
1) Is there such a thing as a 'part-time' bus driver?
2) What is the average salary like (just a very rough one will do)?
3) What qualifications and/or requirements do we need?
4) How's the job hours like?
5) What incentives can bus captains look forward to?
Hope those with bus driving experience can share their views and opinions, the pluses and minuses, the good and the bad, so that any prospective new drivers can make informed choices.
Many thanks!
im not really clear about the first 3.
for 4, job hours differ. there are full shifts, split shift for where u do first half of ur job, rest then come back again, or tq shift. someone may explain more on this, as im not really clear.
all the job hours are rather long, especially for the full morning or afternoon shifts. morning starts by reaching depot at about 4am and off work in the late afternoons.afternoon shifts pick up from late afternoons and can end at roughly 1am for some.
incentives u get are free rides on sbst buses and trains.
this is sbst side, im not really sure bout smrt side things so i wont speak what i dont know :)
hope this helped
carbikebus, time to share your experience with both companies.

Now Singapore brings over China ppl here to work as bus captains in SBST or SMRT buses, but still, they are incompetent with Singaporean bus captains. like English communication and familiarisation of singapore roads etc. dunno gt passengers complain their abilities or not lol.
go stomp got alot of comments lah.. true or not i dunno, since my experiences with china bc is not so bad

Ok...so it's shift work... analogous to my guard duty stint in my army camp...
$3000 a month? That's a steal, given the current economic crisis...
SMRT has basic pay of 1200 per month. S shift and running special trips plus driving a bendy will ultimately increase your pay. OT as well.
Actual pay differs. Mainly its between 1600-2000.
public transport will improve if you put clones of me to be bus drivers.
for sure...
1. no waiting for green lights to turn red.
2. always cover up traffic ahead one. no moving slowly at 20km/h. no i'm-early excuse.
okay these two reasons shud be good enough.

Wah, like that win liao, it's another alternative for those who quit sec sch to earn such amount of money. Other jobs that require higher education standards must be 4k 5k liao, if being a BC is that much liao
the bus captain veterans will have more pay, plus no accident pay, plus bonus too.
the veterans have better pay.

Minimum (basic pay) for full time bus drivers is 8 hours, anything after 8 hours is considered OT and pay would be 1.5 times the basic pay rate.

in SMRT, not sure for SBST, if on REST day u work, earn double the basic pay rate, whereas on OFF day, u get paid 1.5 times.
SMRT veteran can earn like 2000 per month, if work 6 days on average...
Uncle who drives 1224 gets about 1100-1200 per three weeks, work average 5.5 days per week per month...
If taking one month to have 4.5 weeks, that is about 1800.
Seldom heard BC earn to reach 3K...
